What are the advantages/disadvantages of making a mod through Garry's mod using lua scripting as oppose to making a Half-life 2 mod itself?

In Garry's Mod, you're restricted to the speed and performance of Lua/Modules as well as everything those can do.
A source mod you can change almost entirely. You can make it an entirely different game with different mechanics if you wished.
Granted, you lose some flexibility, but a Garry's Mod gamemode in Lua is faster and easier to make than a Source mod in C++.
It also gives you immediate access to a playerbase who don't have to do much more than join your server, although on the other hand it also gives you immediate access to players and server owners who will DDOS the shit out of you simply for existing.
