• Want to make GMod 2.0?

Just out of curiosity how many people would be willing to work on a project to make gmod 2.0 on the source 2 engine as a team on github? I honestly like the idea of gmod but I've grown sick and tired of the community that is behind it. I also dislike how un-optimized gmod is tbh. I am not blaming the people who are working on it right now because I thank you for doing what you do and such. I just find it extremely limiting with the refusal of moving to source 2 and the loss of mulri-core rendering. Why should you expect any coder to code a awesome gamemode with custom models, textures, and animations for a game that has bad optimization and a community that is gonna ignore whatever new gamemode that pops up? It's no wonder why we don't have many new coders. I feel like all of those issues are whats killing this community not only the player base but just the state the game is in.
No
Garrysmod isn't that badly optimized. Good fucking luck making one that handles all the different lua instances across different rendering threads and doing it in such a way that won't require rewriting every addon. There might be 2 or 3 people on this whole website with the skills to do that, but they are probably working on more important stuff. Get a computer that doesn't suck. tl;dr ITS NOT AS SIMPLE AS YOU THINK OR IT WOULD BE DONE BY NOW
Garry's Mod is actually really good even if it is running on the old version of the source engine. Also, Why would you go from GMod 13 to GMod 2?

If I thought it was easy I wouldn't have offered to do a group project on github. You completely misunderstood me. An upgrade would probably be writing it in CS:GO's version of Source. No idea if you can create a source mod for that version though
Garry's Mod is poorly optimized, it's a fact. Lack of multi-core support is the main culprit.
Garrysmod isn't that badly optimized
It's pretty bad when compared to what it was pre gm13.

Unless S2 makes Garry's Mod more fun to code for, I highly doubt porting it would really do much to combat the Bullshit Invasion.
I will really be happy if gmod 2 has a java api, would give me an excuse to learn it.
As cool as it'd be to see Garry's Mod "made right", either created by Facepunch or not. I don't see the latter taking off. The community makes the game regardless of if a small minority agree with the gamemodes they play. You'll end up with HL2: Sandbox.
I don't see the latter taking off
you know what they say, if you build it they will come if somebody makes a superior product to gmod i have no doubt that many people will switch over to it and create a whole new community around it the major opposing factor to doing that is the enormous backlog of mods and content available to gmod that the new game simply won't have until its community has got the hang of the scripting API and started to build the same kind of cool shit that is commonplace in gmod

Even if something DID beat it, it will ruin everything
Source 2 isn't even out yet, for all we know the whole engine could be written in assembly.
Nothing can/will beat garrys mod. Even if something DID beat it, it will ruin everything
nothing is immune to being superseded by a superior product gmod has plenty of shortfalls and limits that could be erased in the new game, stuff like: - shitty arbitrary limits on map size and number of brushes due to source - poor support for modern pcs (no multicore rendering being the biggest culprit) - terribly unoptimized particle system - compiling models for source is unnecessarily clunky and primitive, especially now that we have engines like unity and ue4 that have drag and drop support for .fbx and .obj models - textures over 2048x2048 are known to be very buggy - lack of a good dynamic lighting system - the fucking server browser - lack of good built in vehicle physics, making vehicle physics in lua requires a lot of hackery - many features that are dodgy and/or or poorly documented (nextbots, im looking at you) - rubbishy npc ai support in general (ok they aren't THAT bad but again engines like ue4 take a shit all over gmods dated ai system)
I'm getting solid 120 fps with everything set to high on vanilla gmod maps bro, and this is just a normal dell computer. I do however recommend disabling vsync and motion blur, as these both seem to make my computer stay locked at 60 fps, and at 120 fps you don't notice screen tearing anyway.

There's really no need for more fps over the refresh rate of your monitor as it'll be bottlenecked at 59/60hz anyway unless you have a fancy 120hz model.
This reminds me of that HL2 sandbox mod but I forgot its name. It's like 10 years in development and still inferior to Gmod.

But yeah, I also recommend turning motion blur off, especially if your framerate tends to dip into the 30's.
Source 2 isn't even out yet, for all we know the whole engine could be written in assembly.
If valve write the entirety of source 2 in assembly and force anyone writing for it to write it in assembly also I mean even the hypothetical doesn't make sense. Assembly isn't a universal language - assembler is unique to individual processors But to go along with your hypothetical that they had a thousand different versions of source 2 all written in assembly and forcing developers to write in assembly too (they'd need to write 1000 different versions to make it work for all processors) then holy Jesus valve would be committing suicide.
Joke Your head
Joke Your head
I mean don't get me wrong, I laugh at the joke as much as anyone but meh maybe I'm just being too pedantic today, :( sorry exho
Would be nice to have at least two thread like Crysis 1, One for the CPU (Physics, AI, scripts) and the second one for Drawing, which is pretty cool, so heavy scripts/physics does not make your fps drop to 3. (It would be like running SCRDS in local, one process for the serverside things (Physics and shit), and hl2.exe for the rendering) But we know it's not going to happen. PS : Crysis 1 even if it's old is sometime better than recent game if we look at the engine.
An upgrade would probably be writing it in CS:GO's version of Source. No idea if you can create a source mod for that version though
Or wait till valve releases episode 3 but that might take too long.
Or wait till valve releases episode 3 but that might take too long.
sorry but there wont be an episode 3, if anything it will be hl3 but probably nothing
If half life 3 came out now, i feel it would be like Duke Nukem Forever, too much hype it doesn't meet the requirements. But it's my insight
If half life 3 came out now, i feel it would be like Duke Nukem Forever, too much hype it doesn't meet the requirements. And they know it.
