I was checking over on Nuclear Fallout servers and they have a sale right now for VPS, for $19.99 a month I can get -

I was wondering what the pros versus cons would be to doing that versus just ordering a 24 slot server for $24.99 a month. I've never managed a VPS before so that would be something to take into consideration, although I'm not so stubborn I wouldn't give it a try if it means I have better control and ability to do more with my purchase. From what I can see I would also have a bandwith limit (although I doubt I would hit that considering I'm using it for game servers).

For $16.
Go for the VPS, you will be able to host as many servers as you want and as many as you think it got performance to host. You will have full control of everything yourself and the performance per $ will be alot higher. They also include free windows if you dont feel like using linux. And as you said, you will never hit the 8000 GB bandwidth limit. Using a windows vps is as simple as using your windows computer.
I would go for NFO btw.
As I post in every hosting related thread, https://hosthatch.com/openvz-ssd-vps
For $14 you get 4 cores, 2gb ram, 3.5TB of bandwidth and 100gb SSD space.
NFO is fantastic, I'd go with them.
i'd love to hear people's reasons for NFO being bad, i thought they were shitty because that's what FP says - until i tried them, then i realized there appears to be nothing wrong
anyway, the NFO vps gives you dedicated cores which are pretty good, plus they're pretty helpful when it comes to network stuff (if for some reason everyone is lagging but you're not being attacked they can mess with routing and stuff), vultr vpses are nice too but personally i'd go with nfo out of the two, haven't tried hosthatch so no comment
Currently hosting 2 servers with Vultr and their performance is really good, they've got benchmarks on their site as well, it seems to outperform loads of hosts.
I personally use Vultr and it's been really great so far, for my first VPS. Having full control of your server is a must in my opinion.

The SSD Space is useful but 2gb of ram isn't enough on a VPS for myself imo. If you get a VPS I suggest more than just 2gb of ram, esp if you want more than one server.
EDIT: I also have a MySQL + Apache servers running on there that is why I use more ram.

512mb ram on a linux vps (windows is just, not the point, that shit takes far too much ram) is enough for a single srcds server unless you're doing some super intensive server, i haven't seen/don't even think srcds can use more than 512mb of ram per process, mysql + a web server that isn't as crappy as apache like nginx will only use another 100mb of ram on top of that, a 1gb vps tends to be enough for 2-3 srcds servers + web stuff imo (things like TTT don't seem to go too far above 300-400mb of ram unless a lot of players are on and doing stuff)
For just srcds I've never had RAM be the problem, CPU is the number one issue, with drive space and connectivity being the next big issues. It will depend on what kind of server you're running. The demands placed on a 30 player RP server (generally higher RAM requirement) will be different than an ACF combat server (where drive space for the models + other source games and a good CPU will be more important).
Thanks everyone for your input. I decided to go with NFO for the two core because I've used them for 4 years now and just seemed the better option for what I'm doing.

Right now I'm using the $4 package for my Dev server. While its not intense load, there is a mysql server and a webserver running on it. It can also hold 8 of my friends at 66 ticks without lag. SRCDS doesn't use more than 1gb of ram, and if you don't plan on having a lot of players, 512mb will do fine. Its the CPUs that matter.
I'm using level 3 classic from OVH and so far so good. That is of course if you don't mind using a Linux distro. If you want windows best bet is the cloud servers.

I found OVH's Classic range has pretty weak processors and I struggled to run a SRCDS instance with them because it seems they oversold, maybe I just got a faulty node.
I had some issues with OVH classic for game servers. It handles my web and teamspeak stuff fine though. I would suggest the Cloud stuff if you want to host a gameserver because they guarantee processor use.
