In game ads like pinion annoy people. So why not have a system in place where viewing adds is optional? I feel that
this would keep both people who do want to support a server happy, and people who don't want to watch adds happy.
Idea for implementation.
1. Player joins server, spawns in. MOTD comes up n such.
2. player is given a dialog check box, that gives the user the option to disable adds.
3. if a player has checked the opt out of adds button, nothing further happens to the player.
4. if the player has opted in for adds. each time a player re pawns, or a round ends, or at any time you might feel
some screen time isn't being used, it displays an ad. preferably something that won't make playing on the server horrible.
5. once a player reaches X amount of ad views. the player receives custom aesthetic benefits similar to how some donation systems work.
players can edit this option when ever they like.
I just feel most of the friction towards advertising comes from the lack of control on the receiver. If someone is given a choice, then maybe people will be less inclined to reject them?
If you need to rely on advertisements to pay for your server, you should not be hosting a server.

What about servers that seem to use donations as a way of getting by? I don't get how this is any worse then that really.
I have seen popular servers with adverts, like that shitty clocktown zombie survival server
I honestly don't understand why you want to play on one because there isn't a shortage of Gmod servers and the majority don't have adverts
One thing I thought about doing was having adverts in like a 1 pixel by 1 pixel derma frame, which is pretty scummy but still

If you have to rely on donations to pay for your server, you should not be hosting a server. I know plenty of server owners pocket the cash from donations, because of the amount of donations they make vs the actual cost of running the server. For example, the owner of one of the most popular DarkRP servers makes $1000-$3000 per week selling custom classes, VIP, weapons, etc on his server (his server gets maybe 400 unique players a day per server)

See, i feel that most of the problems with advertising, inside and outside of Gmod, comes from the obnoxiousness of them, if an ad is out of the way, not in your face and optional. Then i wouldn't mind them so much.
I think even ad block now has a system in place to unblock unobtrusive ads.
I don't like ads either, but i realize that without them, some great things on the internet would struggle to get funding.
Without a good system in place for projects like server hosting to get funding, it leaves only people who can afford to spend that sort of money to buy servers.

See, this is like the opposite end of the spectrum, where someone is using gmod and what would otherwise be free content, to make money solely for themselves. I feel that if you are going to be making money from gmod, be it ingame ads or donations. it should be purely self funding.

You could do something cute like have billboards in your server that display a 3d2d panel rendering the ad.
more trouble than it's worth though, you'll get one view per player connected to your server, ads support stuff because they run on sites getting 10k+ hits a day, even the most active server in gmod probably doesn't shift more than 200 people in a day.

That actually sounds like a good idea. completely optional, not in your face. and the views would maybe even be higher than other implementations.
I think that the biggest problem with ads in game is the way they completely grab the users screen.
When this is the case, it causes people to end up hating them, and likely not revisiting the server.
This idea might actually fix that.
The absolute worst is autoplay ads which continue to play after you exit the motd.. I never come back to those servers
no. just no

I've actually tried this with reasonable success at a rate that would see me getting at least 6 dollars a month (which is actually enough to pay off a DigitalOcean box and then some) but adfly banned me both times.
It wasnt 1 pixel by 1 pixel, I just had a small frame pop up off screen with enough time to load the ad, linger for a bit, then self-delete.
The great thing was that I surveyed the players and they didn't seem to be lagging whatsoever.
At the moment I'm trying to get my system to work with pinion but video and audio ads have pretty much killed that for the moment (DHTMLs can't be silenced). I can't have that disturbing the players.
The moment I first saw an ad on a server I'd probably crash it and leave for good. I HATE advertisements, I go out of my way to cut them out of my life in every area I possibly can. You can bet good money I sure as shit am not gonna play on a Gmod server that's running ads. Fuck that noise.
Why play on a server that gives you something that you don't want?
