Short and sweet: friend gave me the font files for a font he purchased. I like this font a lot and wanted to use it in an addon I am going to make, but then I thought, since I would obviously have to include the font file for users to be able to see it as I want them to, would that be illegal?
Ya
It depends on the license on the font. Some paid fonts allow redistribution of the fonts under certain terms, others disallow it entirely. Ask your friend if he was given an EULA or License when he purchased the font.
i think most paid fonts allow distribution but not reselling or modifying, non distribution fonts are 100% useless in computing after all because the user needs to have the font to even see it

I assume they're for creating graphics. I'd buy the shit out of that font if I could actually use it properly, but nope. They ain't useless, though. Perhaps I'll purchase it and create a PNG fontmap for the weights/sizes I need. https://www.myfonts.com/fonts/processtype/stratum2/licensing.html
You're going to the cells, punk

There's a shit load of effort and knowledge that goes in to typography, it's an art.
Yeah but it means nothing to me personally if I'd like to use it in a publicly available project, but can't due to licensing. I could find an alternative free font, yes, I know, but it's that one unfortunate fact that it happens to be the only thing that fits my design. basically S.O.L., so oh well

or just... get a free font http://www.dafont.com/
Pro-tip: If you have to ask if something is illegal it probably is :zoid:
http://www.dafont.com/cookie-dough.font great font for darkrp hud
I'm hoping you aren't serious, because I blew a very large amount of air out of my nose when I saw that font.
