Hello Facepunch!
I have over 3100 hours in garrysmod now over 4 years and I have seen lots of problems and solutions. There is a problem now which concerns me and that is Counter Strike Source Content.
Alot of the stuff in garrysmod is based on CSS content, maps, props, models and weapons, alot of the new players to garrysmod was not introduced to counter strike source like many of us was instead they bought CS:GO which is the new counter strike game on the market.
This creates a problem alot of my players on my server does not have CSS content and can therefor now see all of the map textures and alot of the stuff is error I believe this effects not only gamemodes like Darkrp but prophunt and TTT aswell.
So is it really fair to charge new players to a counter strike game for full price that they are not gonna play they just want it as a "DLC" to be able to play garrysmod till its full extent?
I would like valve and Garry or whoever makes the decisions to adress this issue.
My suggestion:
Make counter strike source free on garrysmod purchase or buy a bundle and get counter strike source for a heavly reduced price.
Thanks!
Yes, it's fair
Counter strike content is copyright by Valve, garry can't really do shit about it other than what any one of us can, which is to reduce the asking cost for css
You used to be able to buy the game in a bundle
this ended eleven months ago

My suggestion:
Develop custom models with decent quality textures and then release them to the community at no charge.
Heck, if they're good enough try to convince one of the Garry's Mod developers to include it in the game.
That way everyone wins. Valve isn't going to let Garry use counter-strike: source content in his game free of charge. If they were going to do that then they would have worked out a deal a long time ago.
If you ask me they should make Counter Strike Source free regardless, CS:GO is the CS game most cs players are playing, and making source free would probably bring more people into CS and then they would check out CS:GO if they enjoyed the concept.
Then probably buy keys and skins
valve $$$$

This is not a solution for the countless maps that use CS:S props and textures that were taken from the CS:S community.
Snip
It's not illegal to get the textures for free. It just depends how you get them.

It is as illegal as pirating a game is.

Can't you download a CS:S dedicated server for free and extract the materials from the vpks? They pretty much give them out that way.

steamcmd and downloading the dedicated server, which contains all the content?

It doesn't contain .vtf's as far as I know.

I'm not sure if it's because I actually owned the game when I downloaded the files, but the files for the CS:S dedicated server I downloaded a good half-year or so ago, contain textures for at least the viewmodels.

Well then Valve can blame themselves.
Ever since they got rid of the gmood+css combo this has started to be a real issue with new players.
Why did they stop that combo deal anyway?
They're all there.

Cuz why not - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=576400029
I switched my servers over to no css content a year ago for this reason.
Not sure there is a good solution.
Here;s an idea, dunno how viable it is: Valve could allow users to purchase just the models, weapons, and textures, for CS:S. (should? Eh, prob not the right word, sounds too forceful)
- The user would be supporting Valve, getting the content needed for gmod weapons, maps, etc to work properly LEGALLY.
- Users who want the content, but not CS:S itself, can get JUST that content.
- People who want CS:S can still buy the full game
- Valve still makes money
Probably some stupid little pitfall I am missing that would make this idea undoable. >_< Ah well.
Yeah, you should call up valve and convince them to do this
Make an info box pop up when someone starts up garry's mod and cs:s content is not installed/enabled.
(make sure people can disable it from popping up everytime)

What's that gong to do? Make them come here and complain that CSS content is beggining to be a problem?
someone could pretty much make a bundle with steamcmd and a batch file that downloads cs:s, dod:s & l4d2 content, and puts it in the addons directory
would be the thing that just goes around and everyone knows about it in the end

Just buy CSS, especially if you're all ready willing to spend money for the content of the game lol

It would tell them to get cs:s so they wouldn't come here.

They will still come here and complain that CSS content is beggining to be a problem because they don't want to buy it
They don't come here, they go on the Steam discussions and make stupid threads asking how to get the textures and blaming Garry...
Doesn't help that C:SS is still $20. I would imagine that a game of that age would be at max $10.

Yah, it's honestly like they are riding on the fact that now-adays it is a sin to not have the game if you own Garry's Mod.
Why not just use SteamCMD or w/e css uses, and download files for a CSS server, which includes the content, for free from valve and copy it over to your gmod folder?

because most of the people complaining are children who have no idea what you just said

I and many others publicly host the games content for players to download. Valve doesn't care, they'd get it taken down if they did.
