No offense is meant to the server owners, but seriously, I spent hours trying to find a decent sandbox server, preferably a "build and kill" type server, it was all in vain.
Why do server owners think that it's a good idea to have gigabytes of low-quality server content, like buggy HUDs, cartoonish player models, and various useless model packs that aren't used anywhere else, but must be downloaded unless one wishes to see ERRORs everywhere? On the other hand, almost all servers miss one or more cruicial, and universal addons, like wiremod, sprops etc. Or the said addon is so badly configured that it's borderline useless, for example when the server owner leaves all E2 extensions and/or custom hologram models disabled (often the said server owner is also absolutely clueless about what these things are). Or when they place retarded restrictions on tools, no sir, I won't play 24 hours on your server just to have access to AdvDupe.
Even the best servers miss basic things, like they don't have the content of source games (other than HL2 and CSS) mounted. I understand that everyone has different demands, that's why I did not list for example the lack of PewPew as an issue, but seriously, at this point, it seems like building anything more complex than a bathtube car will make using it on most servers impossible, because like 99% of them miss even the most basic things.
You're not looking good enough then, this thread has some good advanced servers in its OP
I have no trouble building advanced cars on GME Build and Cre8ive, aside from the occasional instance where the server falls over. Give them a try.
You are looking for the wrong servers, "build and kill" is just the wrong thing to look for. That's the sort of shit that attracts the younger audience variety that screams down the microphone.
Check out the Work In Progress thread for a list of decent servers, most will be using ACF rather than pewpew. (For obvious reasons)
GGG has a dedicated battle server for ACF vehicles and whatnot, including a domination style gametype.
Check out GGG - Toshkent for a hybrid server that most people use for general building and testing of ACF vehicles: 192.157.56.114:27017

Thanks, I will check it out.
The prerelease build of garrysmod now has peer to peer, so if you want to invite some friends over and play by your own rules, you can. Just thought i'd let you know
I think what you are missing mate is "What makes a good Sandbox server?". Sandbox is just Sandbox. How can a server owner actually make it better? That isn't a rhetorical question, I would actually like to know what you would like to see in a Sandbox server. Personally I can't see too much being done. Do you not like servers because of the way the gamemode works? The way the gamemode works for multiplayer? The choice of content? How moderation and rules are carried out?
(No I'm not planning to make one, I just genuinely wanted to know)
I feel your rant is only towards your own preferences. Regarding things like bitrates and stuff, I think sometimes people talk out their arse.
When it comes to Sandbox, not too much can be done regarding spawning rates and movement of props etc. There is only so much a server can withstand whether it is cheap or decent. I personally don't like Sandbox as I've never enjoyed it much unless making screenshots, but even still I don't think Sandbox works well with too many people. I guess if it was something like basewars where you build a base and then fight each other with friends, then sure Sandbox is perfect for that, but I feel overall Sandbox is just a normal 5- player building gamemode.

Sometimes the way moderation works (restriction on tools etc), but mostly the choice of content. As I experienced, the overhelming majority of the sandbox servers is not about building anymore, but rather about messing around with addons like SCars, (re)TARDIS, and the legion of anime girl player models.

it would be fine if
a) players built things while keeping other players in mind
b) server owners stopped opening twice as many slots as the server can withstand

there's a good mostly rules free build and kill server in aus but beware, the playerbase is mostly children. That being said, its build and kill so you can just farm them with wiremod death machines until they all ragequit

I do that, for example. I make mechs that softly spoonfeed nicely shaped 140mm rounds to kid's faces if they join a server they don't fit on. Does that count?

What if your server is running 100x as many slots as it can handle? :v:
[sp]Seriously though, no sandbox server can handle 100 players without placing some severe restrictions.[/sp]

That's like saying no container can ever hold more than 100 gallons of water. It can be made bigger, and the material improved.

but this material hasnt been improved since 2008 and the size increase is cutting off a foot from the bottom and taping it back on top

Wiremod death machines, especially hunter-killer drones are my speciality :smug:
some of them

you would need to make drastic changes to the server, game engine, and netcode to come close to making a 100 zlot build server work.

less to do with the attributes and quality of the end product (because contraptions are going to cause lag, period), and more to do with the process of building it
for example, a really bad habit I see all the time is people all building in the same area portal near the spawn location of the map (obviously only applies to non-open maps)
I guess that's because people naturally like being around others while building and because they are too lazy to move far away

Or not closing their garage doors while building. It is perfectly okay to build right next to spawn on gm_carcon if you use one of those two garages on ground level and close the effing doors. Almost makes me want to rig up a wire door closer that will, upon detecting an open door, close it again after waiting 30 seconds. People like to open my garage door and leave it as such.

4x4x4 phx cube saves the day in that case
probably because nobody tries to make good sandbox servers anymore because who seriously plays sandbox.
It's a subset of a subset of a subset. People who seriously play sandbox exist, it's just a very small minority, and finding and retaining players is very difficult.
most servers are build and kill
regular build servers that arent on gm_flatgrass have been fine for me
im hosting one on gm_flatgrass_classic and i-i-i-i-i-i-d say its p fun :)

Perhaps he saw my ~20m tall mech pointing its two 100mm cannons at him or something...
