• How to get people in your server.

I own a server and was wondering how does one get people to play on it? I am getting upset at the days where it goes empty all day. D: [sp]This isnt the meaning of the thread bu the ip is: 71.183.123.4:27015[/sp]
You wait. Some servers get lucky and get players quick, other's take a while. Try to make your server unique, don't make another DarkRP server, and most importantly, don't advertise on other servers, makes your own server stupid.

Because it seems like to get that you have to have players to start with.
Use a good gamemode (some original stuff) DO NOT HOST ROLEPLAY, adapt to suggestions that people on the server say. Be friendly and open. [editline]edit[/editline] It's amusing to see the people rating me dumb after I told him not to host RP. V:v:V Also for you people, read this and think again.
Are people more attracted to a full or nearly full server? Because it seems like to get that you have to have players to start with.
People are attracted servers with lots of players, invite your friends. Since I'm nice, I'll go ahead and join the server I guess.
Well ti is currently Custom TTT
There's your issue. Refrain from hosting TTT, Sandbox, DarkRP, Zombie shit, Fretta, or Spacebuild. Everyone who plays those already found their niche and they're overpopulated anyway.
Im hosting a 10 slot build server in sydney, but i dont want to just post in thread's like "COMES JOIN MA SERVA LAWWWLLL K THX" Is there any thread, or site i can just post my details with out looking like a dickhead with a shit server, and when people look, they can find?

As already stated, get a gamemode which isn't used a lot, or if you can, try getting a custom one.
It would be lovely if someone hosted a Radbox or a Winter Survival gamemode...

Get one then.

For people, like me, who don't won't to spend money on these things. You could always look at coding, learn, redo the code, [del]make love there women[/del], and ask for help. [editline]20th February 2012[/editline] I made a lua script by looking at other scripts, see how it works and put them together, while also asking help, to make this. Nice to see everyone posting the same thing. I say follow that advice lol.

Making your post completely wrong. Yea, sandbox has more on the stats page. But that's not a custom gamemode and just isn't the same.

Making your post completely wrong. Yea, sandbox has more on the stats page. But that's not a custom gamemode and just isn't the same.
You're replying to the wrong person. And no. You're so completely wrong that it hurts. Gamemodes as DarkRP or PERP are the worst gamemodes you'd ever imagined to get running with a couple players on and once it is actually running with 10+ players on, shit hits the fan if your admin staff isn't trained enough to deal with the situation. Take a look at the server list. You can see a lot of DarkRP servers that have 0 people. Then only a couple with about 5-10 people in and quite a lot with 15+ people. The servers that have a good amount of people have had it for a long time because they have a userbase that keeps coming. For OP, there's no userbase which makes it so god damn hard to populate AND keep the userbase. And this comes from someone who despises RP nowadays but helped running one a couple years ago (Original Hunts' PERP with Hunts as a coder). Go onto your own DarkRP server or PERP server and you can stay there for hours without getting a person joining you. You'd either need to get your friends on to help out because with less than 5 people (that you don't know) and it'll be boring for both the people on the server and yourself. Take another gamemode as Sandbox, which is a gamemode, just comes with GMod, and you can be 1 person on and then joins another one. And another one. And another one and it keeps going like that because you can still be 2 people on Sandbox server and not be bored. It's so much easier to populate a sandbox server or any other gamemode that doesn't heavily rely on its userbase simply because they can jump directly into the game without having to think about anything, other than getting something done themself.
Yea, sandbox has more on the stats page. But that's not a custom gamemode and just isn't the same.
Yeah, yeah right. "It's not a custom gamemode, it's just not the same!". When did OP actually state something about the fact that he wanted to run a custom gamemode? Wait, he didn't. You're using your own personal opinion right now and not on how to get his server populated. You're going to have a hard time getting an RP server populated compared to Sandbox so it baffles me how you can even say that it's better when it comes to popularity. Get a couple addons to the sandbox server, be friendly and accept the peoples suggestions if they come up with "Hey, you'd need MakeSpherical here" because then the people will come again, they'll become regulars and keep visiting this. Nearly ALL of the DarkRP servers that has about 5 people right now are the standard versions of DarkRP. There's no difference from the servers. They don't make any difference, the person who went onto the server won't even remember it for anything simply because it's not special. It's a rare thing to see a specially modefied DarkRP that's not "more guns and drugs and moneyprinters" with under 5 people simply because they get their userbase of x amount of people. If OP just wants to get his servers populated, then it's not time for him to get a coder or sit around to modefy his own gamemode over time. He needs a gamemode that can be put on, have himself come on and it's going to start populating only with his own help. Not by anyone else, which is why I quickly said no to roleplay servers.

Fill it with friends always works, get about 8-18 of your friends and let them be on the server for a few hours and just play the gamemode. The server will get higher on the list and people start to join, noone is going to join a empty server.
Run DarkRP. :v:
I started a community with a latin name with the gamemode of TTT. It took off faster than you can believe. We have an average of 8/12 people ( when people are actually on, which is at least 50% of the time ) and we only started a month ago. We've stayed this steady since week two. Basically, my friend is an amazing at populating and he got the server to full the first day. Then he did that the second day, and the third. For the entire week we had a pretty big server and then that just kept happening. Recently, the server just started populating itself, after we got a donation of $35. Oh and also, we constantly told our members about upcoming updates so they had something to be excited for. With that in mind, we kept updating the server and adding custom things and a pointshop for people to have something to work for.

What a bastard I am for posting my own opinion. Wait, isn't that what you just did? An opinion based on your personal experiences at running servers? Huh, well I guess that's just my opinion about your post which was an opinion as well, in my opinion... How you can disregard information because it's part of an opinion baffles me, specially when it's on a forum. The whole IDEA of a forum is to get peoples opinions on subjects. As for sandbox you missed my point, I do agree sandbox is fun and easy to get going. I meant that it in the way that I don't class it because it's the default gamemode, people will always join sandbox servers. Either to try new stuff, show off there inventions, be minges, socialise or just have some fun. It's like asking how to get a CSS de_dust2 server populated, you just leave it and people join to play against each other, then more join bla bla bla. I never said DarkRP is magical to fill, I said it's not tricky. You just need 4-5 players to join for a few days and you're sorted. After a week or so it will fill itself. Administrating it in the future was NOT his question, and doesn't have to be hard that's just your opinion on managing them...
i checked it out but it was empty :suicide:
i checked it out but it was empty :suicide:
That is also annoying. Nobody wants to be that "one person to populate the server" so it is always me who goes in alone waiting for others.
