Just curious to hear opinions, what do you guys think Gmod will look like in 5 years?
Hopefully the same/improved, but you never know dude maybe it will go all to hell probably not tho.
Probably the exact same.
DRM.
I doubt it'd be as populated. I think a lot about that, when, if ever, gmod will finally die off. It's already had a really passionate and shockingly long lifespan for a mod-come-game.

Sure, the population will dwindle over time, but it is going to be long since it can be considered dead.

I want to see a return of teamplay. It was the best gamemode and I still have no idea why it died after gmod 9. I want a time machine just to go back and play that with some buddies again
I thought I would never play Gmod again, after I stopped caring for it in 2013 (Dad bought it for me in 2007), yet here I am again. This game will always have a player base, it may dwindle over the years, but there will always be somebody with an unfinished project!
People will be playing my SeriousRP gamemode, or an edited version of that. At least that's the plan. I'm also working on a replacement for rp_downtown. I'm not the world's best mapper so I won't get shitty if people think it's good enough to copy and edit. I'll probably release the vmf, too.
5 years time? Probs an impossible serverlist to browse because GTeam haven't fixed the browser to not display fake users and bullshit game modes.
GMOD 2 will be running on the Frostbite engine and will require a UPlay™ account in order to play.
There will only be RenameRP on the top of the list.
Tbh it will probably still be played in 5 years provided there's no Gmod 2.
GMod 2 I hope, coming with a better engine with easier mod creation tools (because I suck ass at developing)

will able to play it with VR Gadgets
more improved and realistic.
With the upcoming Source 2 engine hopefully coming out early this summer not later, I look forward to and hope it will be ported over to the new engine. I'm not sure the detail of how all the objects, props, maps will look but I hope it will open up a whole new avenue of game play. Especially with the sandbox aspect.
I belive it would be possible to port items from source 1 to source 2. And now you really made me think how would Garrys mod be on a newer engine, hm. But Garry himself already stated that this may not happen. https://twitter.com/garrynewman/status/573025717908348928?lang=en
As far as the mapping forum is aware, gmod is going to be on unreal engine. I wish valve would release their engine already.
As far as the mapping forum is aware, gmod is going to be on unreal engine. I wish valve would release their engine already.
Lol, no it's not.
Unreal engine? What? What have i missed? Also, isn't CSGO getting ported to Source 2 this summer or did i read something wrong?
No, the Chinese version is the one that is apparently going to be using Source 2. I'm not sure that it's 100% confirmed, though.
Since Gmod 2 (not called that) is currently in development. I'm hoping Garry makes Gmod 2 more like Unity since he made Rust in Unity. Lua is an outdated language in games development, popular when the Source Engine was created. Garry has also said that he may not make Gmod 2 in Source Engine 2. Which would be quite interesting.
Lol, no it's not.
Lol, yes it is. Stop being so oblivious. https://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1550950
5 years? Hopefully itt'l be on Source 2 and have far better, more robust physics for us to abuse. But I also want it to retain some of the silliness, which is part of the charm that kept me in the game for so long. Even now, ten years after I first got the game, I still find amusement firing up single player and making ragdolls spaz by welding high power thrusters to their extremeties :v:
5 years time?
Just...oh idunno, click the convenient 'Legacy Browser' button on the menu over there? That's what I do because it's quicker to get to Cre8ive than trying to wait out the new list long enough to click 'favorites'.
Lol, yes it is. Stop being so oblivious. https://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1550950
Oly fuck how have I not caught wind of this thread yet?
Lua is an outdated language in games development, popular when the Source Engine was created. Garry has also said that he may not make Gmod 2 in Source Engine 2. Which would be quite interesting.
Sure let's mod in javascript instead. /s Why would you ever want any language besides lua? It's literally my ideal language (with the exception of 1-indexed arrays maybe). You can do anything, you're so free, all your data structures and classes have kissed, made up, and are having an orgy next weekend and you're invited. Writing extensions in C or C++ is easier (imho) than python, and I'm told easier than javascript as well. The ease you can introduce meta programming is crazy. It's so simple, you can count the number of built-in types on your hands (as long as you stay on the lua side) and because of it's simplicity it's spawned several transpilers. The only time I'm not writing lua is when I actually need the speed, or have to deal with some matlab bullshit.
I've played Gmod for 5 years since 2012 I guess and if Gmod will move towards on the way it's now moving, it will be as bad as it now. Workshop that flooded in the garbage of riging, model porting and dupes. And these updates that break addons every time. I remember that time when expression 2 was a thing and a lot of people making amazing creations, when you make a little simple plane or car, and everybody say something like "Whaaa, how did you do this, it is amazing!!", and that people that call "Minge" doing some weird stuff, uhhh that time was great :cat:
Garry's mod simply cannot die out since there is not any Sandbox game on the same level with Gmod or better than gmod. Sure there are some random sandbox games here and there, but still to this day, Garry's mod is the best sandbox, from gamemodes to freedom of building anything.
This. Other games may try to compete, but garrysmod literally defines the freeform sandbox genre. It's also technically a first person shooter. A role-playing simulator. While also having quite possibly the best modding userbase any game has ever had.
Garry's Mod is whatever you want it to be. From FPS to RTS. There is so much to do. The only thing I have said for 12 years that limits the game is size and processing.
