• Sandbox isn't the same anymore

Anyone else feeling it? I remember playing old hl2dm build servers like phoneburnia and the yaypit and having the time of our lifes building and acting retarded and all we had were these poorly created maps and very limited commands to do anything, but we did everything . Now playing gmod all i see are players spawning dupes, spawning NPCs for a bit, and never really building anything but rather installing addons instead. "Want to build a car? Fuck that ill just download an addon". "Lets try to make it up to that high place! Why? just noclip noob". missing the entire fun of the experience. everything back in the days were fun because of challenge and using your imagination and creativity to have a great experience, but now i feel like everything can just be done on a whim and be done with it. everything has to be well polished and easy to use for anyone to even bother. of course im not speaking for everyone or saying everyone who plays gmod does these things, but from playing on most sandbox servers this is what i see. Thoughts?
I can agree, nobody really builds anymore, it's all about darkrp, jobs, addons, fnaf, etc. The people that still know how to build and do cool shit are a very small minority now.
Gmod Sandbox hasn't been good since 9 in my opinion. They added permissions which stopped you working together.
There are many decent build servers that exist that are populated.
They added permissions which stopped you working together.
..except you can still work together? Add each other to the exception/buddy list or whatever it's called..
I wasn't specific enough, but the build servers that I know of that I trust with active playerbases are: ACF Combat build servers (Lots of moderntech builders, focus on combat): GGG - Toshkent (and the rest of its ilk): 192.157.56.114:27017 (US) Fast Red Snail: 70.42.74.154:27015 (US) Paradigm Shift: 45.56.78.184:27015 (US) Real Builders: 31.186.251.35:27015 (EU) Car building servers: Vehicle Heaven: 169.254.67.48:27015 (EU) Cr8ive: 213.163.83.197:27015 (EU) There's probably more and, please, if you've got examples feel free to post them. Remember when sandbox had no addons for prop protection and minges would unfreeze your s**t :suicide:

I can't find a single thing in that thread that isn't vehicle building.. same thing goes for the servers I join, for the most part. To be honest, I wouldn't know. The vast majority of people in that thread come from those servers. There's other types of projects that exist, but a car, a tank, or a plane has a clear avenue for competition. It seems to be the default thing to build.

But yeah, most sandbox servers are either PAC(customize your player and chill)or vehicle building/e2 coding. I'd like to see people start to build apartments/bunkers with interior. Then again the server would die to the propcount...
At least the cars don't look that bad.
I have 800h on gmod and never been on sandbox server i build sometimes airship and stuff whit my friend am i missing lot of fun?
I have 800h on gmod and never been on sandbox server i build sometimes airship and stuff whit my friend am i missing lot of fun?
Depends what people are on the server.

Or just talk about building with. All I want is just a few people to build cool wiremod stuff with..
I have 800h on gmod and never been on sandbox server i build sometimes airship and stuff whit my friend am i missing lot of fun?
Well you're literally missing out on the first thing gmod was made for so...
This thread makes me miss the old Gmod, them golden days.

My server used to be about building and the occasional base war, now it's just 12 year olds screaming about fnaf or racism.

There's an entire thread of Works in Progress if you want to see what the building community seems to be up to
Hate to admit, but I doubt any of them will allow a guy with a bunch of phx, weld tools and a happy face to venture in. I think he meant classic sandbox like those old "gMod Servers" [editline]2nd July 2017[/editline] I remember having more fun in a gMod server than cre8ive at one point, because sheer freedom. [editline]2nd July 2017[/editline] I never had experienced any gMod before 13 I hate to say but for some reason I feel oddly nostalgic for those classic servers and feel.
From my experience most people that do just walk in with a happy look and some welded stuff just walk back out in 5-10 minutes because they feel bored or overwhelmed. I tried to bridge the gap with tutorials and encourage my staff to help out new players. However, they look around, are generally confused, and leave for somewhere that'll let them have a gun, or have fewer errors.
Personally i feel a big issue with gmod 13 in comparison to the older versions of gmod is the duplicator. The thing is that i actually love the duplicator. I can create something and save it for later to either play with again or continue to work on. It was every builders dream to be able to take your creations to any server you want to without it only being saved onto one. But this creates a huge problem because the sense of having built something amazing is completely gone. It used to be that when you join a server and saw something built like a roller coaster, house, base, cars, etc you knew someone here worked on it and it was unique. It made everyone go "omg awesome lets have fun with it!" Now people see something amazing in the server they join and think "who cares" because its easy to assume someone just spawned it with a dupe and they could spawn something of similar if not better value without having to work on anything. In theory this shouldnt be a problem because an awesome creation will always be an awesome creation, but that just doesn't seem to be the case. The wow factor seems to be gone. I remember playing gmod 9 and build servers in HL2DM and having the time of my life building with the source engine knowing that it wasnt meant to be used this way but that only made it more fun for me. Everything we built although was crappy made us go "wow holy shit thats awesome". Now garrys mod is so well polished (for the most part anyways) and tweeked the source engine so much we really don't have the same experience anymore. Yet at the same time due to all of the new features in gmod13 such as the new spawn menu, the workshop, optimization, and other suck things i feel like i couldn't fully go back to the older versions. If only we could have that wow factor back.
Servers such as GGG lock out gayrydupe, so they're forced to build their own creations from scratch. You'll recapture that feeling by pushing the limits of Havok's engine with tools such as precision alignment, and seeing what others are building as well on these communities.
The problem is duplicator is such a useful tool that i dont want to restrict it. it has it's pros and cons and the cons unfortunately make (atleast for a lot of players i've come across) creativity obsolete.
It is superceded by Advanced Duplicator 2. Every server Sestze listed has this tool.
Dupes were a thing even when there was Advanced Duplicator 1, which existed since before 2010, even. People were passing around duplications of stuff on garrysmod.org and dupe theft was a thing people did. We make fun of a guy in the WiP thread for spidering off to multiple builders to harass them for dupes.

We make fun of a guy in the WiP thread for spidering off to multiple builders to harass them for dupes.
It's the fact that dupes are so easy to access in gmod 13 because all you have to do is open the dupes menu and you will have access to thousands of dupes. I hosted a sandbox server very recently and it was rare to see someone who built there own stuff. It was either someone who would just spawn dupes for a few minutes and then leave if they got bored of the server or someone who would spawn npcs and other random props and try and kill players. I've considered disabling workshop dupes or restricting them so players who have just joined can't use them but I was too worried that the server wouldn't get any players if I did.
Have to ask yourself what you want out of your playerbase. I'd rather have a server with 3 players that are doing something productive than 13 players, 10 of which are trying to spam npcs/props or murder one another.
Don't be concerned restricting the default duplicator. People building will value having a proper duplicator (advdupe2) over the mess that is the default duplicator. Those not familiar with it can learn really easily, and the loss of low hanging fruit of workshop dupes will enciurage people to learn and automatically filter out those who have no interest in building.
I disable it because there are significant issues with garrydupe: - Instantly spawns in and constrains whatever they're pasting - No delay on use - No limit on number of entities so someone with garrydupe can take a 500 prop megafort that's welded and paste it repeatedly as fast as they can mash the button. Keep in mind that it doesn't allow for parenting, a lot of wire, makespherical, etc. so actually learning GOOD building practices isn't going to happen
