An expanded version of rp_downtown_v4c_v2 Will continue to add and optimize different things here and there, thought it has enough new features to release Suggestions for additions to the map are welcomed! Counter Strike: Source needs to be installed & mounted (Or have CS:S textures installed) Note: I do not take credit for any existing portions of the map. I only take credit for the additions that I have added. The rest goes directly to the previous contributers of the other versions of the map See Changes here for additions to map and credits (Many new additions) In short: - Added many new buildings - Expanded many previous buildings - Added new areas - Made map more vehicle friendly - Added a few secrets - Optimized map (WIP) Screenshots (photobucket) Download here EDIT: Changing the icon doesn't update it (accidentally checked wrong one), but I'm sure you can tell that this isn't a WIP module :P EDIT: Updated description and screenshots to a slideshow, as map has progressed substantially
I see no difference to v4c
I see no difference to v4c
You'll actually have to play the map to see EVERY new thing, but a few new places are shown in some screenshots. I will soon take more highlighting many new features specifically, but for now I just wanted to get some shots of general areas.
It looks ugly and lazy.
I don't see why you say "it looks ugly and lazy". He is giving this away for free, do you know how hard it can be to work with hammer? I'm glad that he has released this, it might not be a huge change, but at least there is a change.

Editing maps is pretty easy as a lot of the brush work is done for you, creating one from scratch is hard.
Yeah I do. Editing maps is pretty easy as a lot of the brush work is done for you, creating one from scratch is hard.
Although I'm still learning more about hammer and am somewhat new to it, I'll completely agree with you that what I've done isn't per say difficult. I'm not trying to show off any mapping skills, I'm simply wanting to share some additions that I've made to a very popular map that I think are cool, intuitive, and add to gameplay.
Did you decompile the previous map or did you get given the VMF for it?
Did you decompile the previous map or did you get given the VMF for it?
No, I decompiled the bsp. I guess my next step would be to get the vmf and add the stuff to that instead
No, I decompiled the bsp.
That adds +1 to crappiness of the map.
That adds +1 to crappiness of the map.
Yes, I suppose it does. Keep in mind that it can only get better, and I am attempting to obtain the original VMF.
Mappers generally don't (or are atleast reluctant) to distribute their VMF's for this exact reason, people make a few edits, slap on an underscore and re-upload it as their own work. Despite this, the area's you've added needs quite a bit of work. The extra tunnel apartments look completely out of place, and the lighting in the tunnel is far too bright. The windows on the additional floor apartment touch the ground, which looks really weird. The additions you have made look like afterthoughts, extending existing brushwork instead of adding new areas. It makes everything look out of place and crowded. Other than that, it's a nice start - but I feel as though it should have been posted on the Mapping forum first, so you could ask for suggestions and improvements before releasing it. Releasing a map from a decompiled BSP also means you didn't ask the original creator for permission, you really should of waited for that the very minimum permission before posting this.
You'll get crucified anyways for making yet another edit of downtown

Secondly, I can understand the frustration some map makers may have from people claiming their work as their own. Upon reflection, I will update the description to better credit the previous contributors. Now, to discuss the additions so far made. Many things need work, yes, but some, the windows that go to the floor for example, were done on purpose. I made the windows the same size as the previous window texture before I added the room. Another thing to keep in mind is that although some don't necessarily look pretty, that the point of adding to this map is to expand gameplay abilities, not look super pretty, although that's a nice benefit. I'm sure you can agree that there are parts of the map excluding my edits that don't necessarily look nice. Finally, I am attempting to obtain the original VMF file from Roqj, but from what I've read and seen about him, I'm more likely to inherit a million bucks before I get that VMF. In the end, yes, things need some work, and I will continue to expand the map. With suggestions, I will hopefully be able to create many additions that add lots of functionality, and looks nice too.
I think you're pretty sincere in not knowing what you did wasn't the best and trying to make up for it, so although I'm not in support of this map I'll support any inspired work you do for the future. I hope you'll improve as a mapper and stick around to enjoy our mapping community, 'cause it's super cool. (The mapping subforum, though! All these Garry's Mod heathens don't know what it's like, maaaaan.)

But well, he doesn't place this thing on scriptfodder :v:
But well, he doesn't place this thing on scriptfodder :v:
Well, it's scriptfodder, not mapfodder. It (and probably he as well) would get nuked right away if he posts it there.
It's always good to see somebody trying to improve popular stuff, as far as I'm concerned whoever can do it the best gets the medal. It would be pretty neat if you could make an alternate version with env_skypaint/sun support (TL;DR Gmod Dynamic Day/Night, used for atmos and built in stuff). Only a few maps support this ATM.
Speaking of selling maps, I never understood why people try. Unless it's a commission, server owners shouldn't expect to have to pay for a map, esp. when it's a downtown edit.

Then again no one decent wants to either.
