Maps shouldn't go here, dumbass![/b] Maybe, but I'm posting this here for two reasons; Firstly, I saw [url=http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1399589]this[/url] posted in this section, and it was left alone and not rated Dumb, and secondly, lots of DarkRP server owners go to this section for addons... Not so much the mapping section. It's important for DarkRP server owners to see this map. [B]What is rp_downtown_v4c_v2a?[/B] rp_downtown_v4c_v2a (known as v2a from this point on) was originally a job that a server owner came to me with. After putting the first alpha build of the map on the server, the player count declined severely for the time that it was on because everybody wants to play on rp_downtown_v4c_v2, not some server-specific map edit. That being said, you can probably figure that this is an edit of rp_downtown_v4c_v2. The creator of v2 was a horrible optimizer, as shown by the fact that lower end computers struggle in more crowded sections like in front of the police department... And, you know, the entire map in general. I've taken it upon myself to optimize the map and fix multiple errors in it, and, even though I've only gotten to a2 so far, the FPS gain has been gigantic; FPS is at least doubled in front of the police department, even when it's populated. [B]Why are you doing this?[/B] I'm doing this because of the fact that the original map was horribly done in terms of optimization... and the map itself is horrible according to other people, but I'm not concerned about whether it is or not with this project; it's currently the most popular RP map, so people like it. Long story short, I'm doing this to make it so that if people want to play on a map like that, they should at least play on the version of it that doesn't choke-hold their FPS. I've repurposed this map to be a project that benefits everyone, in every community. I don't want this map to be considered another shitty downtown edit, and I show this by putting hours of work into making the map run more smoothly, and optimizing previously laggy sections. [B]Okay, so what are some changes in this map?[/B] I'll be getting to that below, don't worry. [B]I looked down below and you don't provide a version of the map with the .bsp/.bsp.bz2, only the Workshop download. Am I supposed to extract it?[/B] No, you aren't. I want people to add this map to their workshop collection, and [B]NOT[/B] extract it, because of the fact that I'll be updating this map via the workshop instead of changing the filename. If you extract it and put it on your server, the map won't stay up to date, and you'll cause a ton of issues with people not having the correct map to connect to the server. It's not worth it. [B]But I want to make a modification to this map![/B] I'm providing a link the vmf below if you want to make a modification to the map. If you do so, I'd appreciate if you'd shoot me a message if you release your project, since I'm interested to see where it goes. [*] Changed the sides of some brushes to nodraw. I didn't even get them all yet, I think, but it helped with FPS anyhow. [*] Fixed the stairs at the basement of the mansion not being able to be walked up without jumping. [*] Fixed being able to look directly at a nodraw brush in the apartment building to the left of the police department. [*] Increased the thickness of the black wall separating the admin flat room and the tunnel, so that people can't prop push through it anymore. [*] Fixed some other obvious stuff I can't bother to remember since I started working on this quite a while ago. [-] Removed the theater. You'll see why in the Additions section. [-] Removed the wall separating the rooms in the room behind spawn, making it a slightly more viable area to base in. I plan to add to it later. [-] Removed a pointless wall separating a room in the apartment near the mansion. [-] Removed the singular spawnpoint on top of the roof of the tunnel leading to the industrial area. [-] Removed... some lag. :D [+] Added a new hint brush near the police department. Hopefully it'll increase FPS. [+] Added a small tunnel that's a work-in-progress where the theater used to be. This will, over time, bloom into an underground/sewer area as I update the map. [+] Added lights to the one tunnel that didn't have them. [b]6/25/14[/b] [*] Converted a lot more brushes to func_detail that I missed initially. [*] Changed the sides of more brushes to nodraw. [*] Fixed the black wall in the admin area Z-fighting with the wall. [*] Fixed HDR being too bright by limiting HDR's max brightness to 1/4 of what it was before. Be aware that, due to how HDR works, some alleys will be darker than on LDR until you step inside of them. [*] Fixed a wall sticking out of one of the tunnels... Whoops. [*] Fixed the door frame of one of the doors in the police department. [*] Fixed a nodrawn wall in the industrial area. [b]12/23/15[/b] (next release, WIP) [-] Removed the WIP sewer area, scrapped entirely. Added back the original theater. [-] Removed the room in the shop next to the theater. I know this was in the original map, but I removed it since I had to literally cut the theater from the old map and paste it back into this one to re-add it. It was clipping. I'll re-add it eventually, but it won't be the exact same. [+] More general optimizations for nodraws I missed. [*] Fixed the nodrawn ceiling in one of the buildings to the right of the gunshop. [*] WIP: Started working on fixing the roads in the living area that were a bit off. It should hopefully be easier than I thought to fix. [C] With the nature of this modification, there's bound to be some areas where you can see through the map. I'd appreciate if you'd report those areas, and I'll fix them as soon as I can. The first thing I want to say is we need to let rp_downtown die. I am sorry but I am sick of seeing players ignore good large maps to play on rp_autistictown. If it was up to me I would personally remove all rp_downtown maps for a week until players actually gave other maps a try.

If it's not, I at least want people playing on an optimized version of the map instead of a laggy one.
The problem is, people aren't willing to try. They want things to be the same. For example, if they saw a map with rp_littletown, they wouldn't even go near it. They've never heard of it. Most maps use rp_downtown_v4c_v2, that means that map must be good and every other map is automatically bad. That's the logic of most DarkRP players.

I fear DarkRP Community has Stockholm Syndrome they all know the map is bad. We were actually working on the same thing for our roleplay server, A optimized version of the map because people are too scared to try something new. After playing on v4c_v2 for a year straight and considering that many servers run the map, I just don't touch the map at all. In my case, I'm not sure if optimization will help.

That'll be in due time. Besides, a lot of servers do use that for an efficient admin room. As for other servers, though, especially new ones? The experience is kind of interesting. Whenever you jump on, you never know when the sewer will be deeper, because I'll be pushing out updates every few days, I hope. I agree. The admin area is pointless. I much rather have a fancy room somewhere totally not connected to the map, that can only be accessed via noclip. Considering people can get into that "admin" area.
I'll get to that, then. Not for the next update, though. That one is almost ready minus some HDR issues.

The 6/25/14 update is out, and the changelog is in the main post. Restart your servers to get the latest version, and if you're subscribed to the addon and didn't deploy it on a server yet, restart your client.
