THE PROJECT IS CANCELLED What is "The 7 Hour War"? Well, if you are as big as a fan of Half-Life as me, then those 4 words should speak for themselves. The infamous attack of the combine forces on Earth, only taking them 7 hours to conquer the entire planet in the Half-Life franchise. This mod would represent the view from both sides. What would gameplay be like? You will be able to choose between either Human or Combine forces. What I'm going for here is that each side has a different type of play, yet it still sort of balances out. For example, the human forces will have Armor, which would absorb some of the damage taken, but the Combine forces would have a shield that absorbs all of the damage, until it reaches a break point, in which case you would start taking on full damage unless you find cover so that the shield recharges. Also I'm going for a bit more realistic shooter, by that I'd say it would come as close as realistic as BF3. What kind of objectives are there going to be? Right now I have 3 type of objective-minimods in the making: 1. Sector Control - There are several combine cannons places so that they are in sight of both the Human and Combine base. When one team controls the cannon, it will start firing at the enemy base, each shot lowering the enemy's points by 1. When a team is out of points, their base would explode and the round will be over. 2. Thumper Rush - There is a combine outpost in the middle of either a sandy or snowy area. The base would be surrounded by 5 Thumpers. Thumpers will be only controlled by Combine and the Humans can only disable them. Each time a Thumper hits the ground, a Human point is removed. If Humans have no more points, they lose. If the all the Thumpers are shut off at the same time, the Combine lose. 3. Computer Siege - The map would be equally paced off and in the middle of it would be a huge Combine Super-Computer. If the Humans take control of it, it will start malfunctioning. If the Combine control it, it will continue working towards its objective. When in control by 1 team, a point is removed for the enemy every 2 seconds. When the Human win, the Super-Computer explodes. If the Combine win, a portal storm blows through, killing all the Humans in the vicinity. Note, you can make it so that more than 1 point removed at a time. The number of points is determined by the amount of players standing in its vicinity + 1. Take note though, the computer would be widely exposed and you can easily get killed. What kind of weaponry are there? I have a few ideas in mind, but for now I'm leaving the weapons for later. However videos will be posted of animations progress on the weapons in the WIP section below. How would there be balance among the teams? Like I mentioned earlier, even though each team would have a different perspective of combat, I try to make them balance out each other. Here is what I have so far: [HUMAN]-[COMBINE] Armor that absorbs some of the damage - Shield that absorbs all damage until you take to much and it breaks. Then you need to take cover for it to recharge A grenade launcher attachment for weapons - A combine ball launcher attachment for weapons A parachute for when jumping off high places - A hook and line, allowing you to drop down from high distances faster, but you would need an edge first to do so Still thinking of others to add. I'm open to suggestions. What kind of features are there? Buddy system. When you start playing you can try and invite one of your teammates to become your buddy. A buddy on the battlefield is essential, as now you will rely on each other. You will have to exchange information and coordinate attacks in order to survive. You can only have 1 buddy at a time, so think of this as Co-op. On your hud there will be a TSR (Thermal Scan Radar). It will update every 1 second showing you heat signatures, however not telling you if they are friendly or not. What do you need help with? If you have good modeling or mappings skills, or even have a good idea that you think it would fit the gamemode, feel free to leave a post. Looks brilliant, can't wait to play it.
Also I'm going for a bit more realistic shooter, by that I'd say it would come as close as realistic as BF3
How exactly are pulse rifles and SMGs with internal grenade launchers realistic?
How exactly are pulse rifles and SMGs with internal grenade launchers realistic?
Well what should the combine be using, HUMAN weapons?
Just a little heads up, I'm helping Nick with the mode by making the gun animations.
Nice, but you do know that Combine Soldiers did not Exist during the 7 hour war?
Nice, but you do know that Combine Soldiers did not Exist during the 7 hour war?
Uh, I'm pretty sure they did. Quote from wiki: "...an alien empire known as the Combine that defeated all of Earth's armed forces in only seven hours." If not Combine soldiers, then who?
Uh, I'm pretty sure they did. Quote from wiki: "...an alien empire known as the Combine that defeated all of Earth's armed forces in only seven hours." If not Combine soldiers, then who?
Well the Advisors started the Combine Empire and they raided other planets took them over then brainwashed their race, that's how combine soldiers were made, but don't worry it does not matter. Aka Combine Soldiers are Brainwashed Humans.
Well it could easily be other human-like races. Hell, the franchise doesn't exactly say, so I kinda have to come up with some history here.
Just to point out one more thing, you should read the whole of the wiki, http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Combine_Advisor "The Combine Advisors, known as "Shu'ulathoi" by the Vortigaunts, are the masterminds behind the Combine occupation of Earth, and are commonly speculated as being the master race of the entire Combine empire." And if you think they are wrong then you can Google it and most of it will say the same.
The combine soldiers you know of in HL2 are the overwatch, they wouldn't have been used over the 7 hour war, but i'd imagine that synths were used.
The combine soldiers you know of in HL2 are the overwatch, they wouldn't have been used over the 7 hour war, but i'd imagine that synths were used.
That is a fact, Synths were only used in the 7 hour war, well because they didn't exist, CGNick you can change the name or just make it a Unreal title :P
That is a fact, Synths were only used in the 7 hour war, well because they didn't exist, CGNick you can change the name or just make it a Unreal title :P
Alright, I gotta admit, you guys are more familiar with the history than me, but isn't there some sort of loophole for ground forces? I seriously wanna keep the concept of 7HW. On the wiki it only says that in the battle there were Human Armies and Combine Forces. Can we just go with the concept that they brainwashed some other alien races as well and just used them here?
Alright, I gotta admit, you guys are more familiar with the history than me, but isn't there some sort of loophole for ground forces?
Just label your overwatch taskforce as an experimental program (which would explain the shields and stuff) before you went into full production of them after occupation?
Experimental ground forces. I like it, let's stick to that.
Experimental ground forces. I like it, let's stick to that.
How about armoured synthetic forces?
How about armoured synthetic forces?
Making the ground forces synth on the inside? Yeah ok that actually makes a bit more sence.
How about armoured synthetic forces?
Well he would have to create Syths for that what are hard to make, Eg. Striders, Hunters "Outlands".
Making the ground forces synth on the inside? Yeah ok that actually makes a bit more sence.
Synths are things like Striders.
Well he would have to create Syths for that what are hard to make, Eg. Striders, Hunters "Outlands". Synths are things like Striders.
Alright well, can't we go with the fact that the Human race isn't the first race to be enslaved by the Combine? If so, can't we just take that OTHER alien army and just say it's human like, not like you are gonna see the inside of these soldiers in this mod.
Well he would have to create Syths for that what are hard to make, Eg. Striders, Hunters "Outlands". Damn right, and http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=128626 works perfectly fine if you bonemerge.
http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=126330 is a good example of that.
Those don't exist in the hl2 story anymore.
Those don't exist in the hl2 story anymore.
Doesn't matter, they existed at some point.
Ok I'm going back to combine soldiers. Let's just pretend that they existed back then, alright? I know they didn't but I'd rather stick to the 7HW concept and I doubt anyone wants to play as a no faced robotic soldier.

It really doesn't matter, in the end it's just a deathmatch gamemode, no one really cares. If you really want a canon explanation, just say that they were synth soldiers in combine soldier suits. The HL2 canon really isn't clear about what exactly happened during the seven hour war, and especially not what kind of soldiers were used. Striders and other synths were used, but I doubt that the advisors actually partook in the fight. The thing about the combine is that it's not a single alien race, it's a bunch of enslaved alien races merged into one empire. Who are we to say that combine soldier suits similar to the ones in HL2 didn't exist at the time of the seven hour war? We have absolutely no idea, the technology must've come from somewhere, so why not assume that they were enhanced/changed versions of suits used when invading earth? But I digress: it doesn't really matter. A possible problem with using the seven hour war theme, though, is that the combine won. How are the human forces going to be able to win in this gamemode?
They won't win, they would just be delaying the inevitable.
Wouldn't that make playing a human pointless and therefor less fun?
Wouldn't that make playing a human pointless and therefor less fun?
Well you don't tell them that!
Well you don't tell them that!
There won't be an endgame tbh. Each round you play would be say, somewhere between the 3rd and 5th hour of the war. So it's in that stage where the forces are at a standoff.
