Blackmailing implies more like "I know your secrets and you'll pay to keep them that way." It's kind of like lacing a drink with a deadly poison vs. a point blank shot to he head. Both will get the same end result, but one is a lot less forceful/bloody. EDIT: Now if the hostage was say, his mistress, I think you could have an argument. Or both, I guess.
