• Fraps or Source Recorder?

Ok so I know many people who use Source Recorder, but I myself use Fraps. I'm not sure how to work the source recorder correctly, but I was mainly wondering the differences between the two. Stuff like the FPS comparison, and CPU usage. Stuff like that.
If I had a nickel for everytime this question came up, i'd be a rich man Fraps is like bascailly the recorder for lazy people. If you've got a reasonable computer and no patience, Fraps is for you. It records pretty much almost lossless quality. The Source Recorder on the other hand takes a bit more time and a bit more patience but produces stunning quality that Fraps couldn't beat. When you get down to the bottom of it, Source Recorder is better, it just takes more time to use than it's simpler adversary.
Would you mind explaining how its difficult to use? During the playback can you pause the recording, and play, stuff like that? I know that you record with consle commands, and all this.
Here's a tutorial I made on Source Recorder: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LST_VkTlKiE (gosh I had a bad accent that day) I couldn't live without Source Recorder, because it allows me to create realtime SDoF and actually record it ALL IN-ENGINE (it runs at around 0,3 fps) [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3N_fde7azw[/hd]

O.o
Why does it run at 3 fps??? O.o
it's rendering so it goes slow, but when you play it it looks amazing and it doesn't lag.
Ok if I may ask one thing. When I play Gmod single player, I can run it fine with high graphics except antialiasing and texture filtering. If I were to record using both of those, would source recorder have to capture my lag? Im trying to understand this correctly, but im confused. I watched the video, and thank you it was useful.
You will NEVER have laggy output with the Source Recorder, because unlike any other recorders, since it's internal to the engine, it can actually WAIT for it to be done rendering the frame. Fraps would just skip it and that would result in jerky motion.
So if i have a bad FPS, the Source Recorder will still be at the host_framerate level?
So if i have a bad FPS, the Source Recorder will still be at the host_framerate level?
yes, thats why source recorder is so beloved.
Oh im loving it even though I haven't experienced it's pure awesomeness. :D [editline]07:16PM[/editline] One more question. Should I save the video as a raw file, and use virtual dub to combine the images, or save as .avi? I believe saving it as .avi would reduce the quality, if i'm not mistaken.

What I rather do nowadays is record as AVI using a lossless codec. Basically, it's just like an uncompressed AVI qualty-wise, but the size is much smaller!
Source Recorder is the way to go. when your are recording crank up the anti-aliasing to max and the aniostropic filtering to max. when your setting up your scene use low settings to get steady fps. Source recorder is for the low-end pc's to the high-end.
Source recorder is for the low-end pc's to the high-end.
Well, like I said, I couldn't have proper runtime SDoF without it considering it does ONE frame every FIVE seconds on the maximum quality settings :p that tool is a godsend

Thanks everyone for your help, i'll post my first video soon to see how it goes.
haha, your accent is awesome
Yea some people think his is annoying, but I think its amazing lol.
haha, your accent is awesome
it keeps getting better over time (some of my friends say they can notice it less and less gradually)
Well thats just how it is with foreign people learning english and vice-versa.
it keeps getting better over time (some of my friends say they can notice it less and less gradually)
Wait, that's you?
Yes, if you check the profile name on the video. Well.. his Sneak peak video.
Wait, that's you?
yeah look at the description of the video i made this tutorial back then in November when YouTube basically asked partners to do TUTORIAL MONTH :v:
yeah look at the description of the video i made this tutorial back then in November when YouTube basically asked partners to do TUTORIAL MONTH :v:
Holy shit, what a difference
Well anyway back to topic, because I have something to add. I was looking at a random source recorder/demo video, and I saw a guy making a camera move very smoothly to its destination, taking waypoints, and curves. I want to know how to do this, I didn't even know you could view from a camera. I thought you had to view from your character. I would love to find a tutorial that explains the basics of how to do this, and how are Source Recorder and Demos different? Can you use source recorder to capture a demo?
Source Recorder =/= demos The two are completely separate, a lot of people believe the contrary nevertheless Anyway I wouldn't recommend using the demo smoother with Gmod, it horribly breaks things if you want a smooth camera you can use the catmull-rom one
Well if it tends to break alot, then i'm going to avoid it. Sometimes I have a short fuse. xD Anyways, So if you are viewing through the camera, the Source Recorder will record through it's eyes and not yours im assuming. I downloaded the addon.
The Source Recorder whatever is on screen, that includes GUI elements if you're not careful [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puJ5lMDBAC8[/hd]
Oh well I will try watch out for those. I'm working on a very short pistol showdown between a Metro Police and a Rebel on moving trains :D I'm having trouble as I was trying to use normal cameras with hydralics, because my addon folder is disappeared, though I can still spawn addons from my other source games. It's quite strange.
