I'm very sorry if this is the wrong section, but I thought that this section was the most appropriate.
Should I choose Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard or Linux Debian (Wheezy or Jessie)/Ubuntu (14.04 Desktop/14.04 Server/15.04 Server/15.10 Server)/CentOS (6/7)? If it is a Linux distro, please choose one of the versions specified. Do NOT say any other OSes not listed here please. Also, note that the Linux plan is cheaper, so I would prefer it, but if there are ANY bugs, please list the bug in your reply.
Windows = Easy management but it is more ressource intensive than Linux.
Linux = Lightweight, more secure, powerful and stable but management is hard on it.
If you want the easiest, go for Windows.
If you want the better (and the cheapest), go for Linux but be warned that managing Linux can be hard.
You would go for Debian if you want to keep a lots of ressources on the system.
You would go for Ubuntu if you want a complete distro.
For CentOS, I will let someone else on Facepunch answering it because I don't known very well CentOS...
SRCDS will run better on Windows, but windows itself will run worse then linux.
SRCDS will run better on Windows, but windows itself will run worse then linux.
Any extra explanation than just it runs better on windows? I know it used to be "back in the day", but how is it compared now?
Especially since the last few gmod updates I've noticed Linux being more stable (I'm however currently running on windows).
Who is your host? If you use NFO I would do server 2008 instead of 2012 R2 because an update they did to their machines made server 2012 R2 unreliable. Either way windows is a lot easier to manage if you don't know your way around Linux
@Gedo789 Which version of Ubuntu should I use and should I use the Desktop or Server version?
@StonedPenguin Please elaborate on that a bit more. I know Windows is a little bit heavier than Linux, but are there any bugs with using Linux on a Garry's Mod Dedicated Server.
@AJ10017 I haven't bought the VPS plan from the host yet, but I plan on using OVH SSD VPS. And, I do know how to work with Linux as I have worked with it a lot.
Please don't say that OVH sucks or whatever. Also, are there any bugs with using Ubuntu Server as my OS?

You should use the latest version of Ubuntu when you can.
Desktop = Better user interaction but this will take more ressources to the system.
Server = No graphical interface and basic but this will keep more performances to the system.
No Linux distros are bad in any ways. The problems are usually about missings/incorrects packages.

Source? I have used Windows Server 2012 R2 on both NFO VPSs and currently a Dedi without issues. Just curious (sorry to threadjack).

when they did the upgrade my VDS completely broke and i had to reinstall the OS
@Gedo789 Ok, but Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Server has longer support than the other Ubuntu versions.

If you're on a VPS SSD plan, I'm not sure you can even get Windows. In that case, I'd reccomend CentOS 7 as it has the longest supported time (until 2024-06-30)
@Adam.GameDev I have never used CentOS before, so I don't really want to use it. I am not focused on the supported time and I'd rather stick with Debian or Ubuntu.
Which version of Debian or Ubuntu should I use and should I use the server version or desktop version? I am experienced with using a non-graphical interface.
Debian 8, enable the Security repository and then you won't get fudgeloads of updates
I used to use Ubuntu 12.04, but I switched over to CentOS 7 as a friend recommended it to me. I haven't had any problems with it.

Oh, thanks for the info. I didn't realize it was this recently -- I switched from my previous VDS to my current dedi about a month ago, so I just missed it.
Ok, Thanks Adam
I always hosted on whatever distro garry(well FPS now) builds on, compatibility with CentOS has been broken many times. In the past CentOS wasn't even an option for a while. I'd really stick to whatever Debian based server distro everything is compiled with to ensure both Steam and Gmod don't have any dependency issues.
Linux SRCDS is wonderful and actually runs far better than the Windows SRCDS, under Windows when SRCDS hits around 120-130% CPU everything comes crashing down and voice becomes unusable. Under Linux Voice comes through just fine until around 160% when everything just comes to a halt.
Linux SRCDS and Gmod are literally unsupported though. the server is definitely considered important now as for over 9 months of the first 15 months of it's existence it was either broken entirely or spawning vehicles would instantly crash the server. The client however has been functionally broken since the first month of it's existence and you were unable to mount other content or start singleplayer/listen servers for the past 2 years until just this last update a couple days ago.
@slayer3032 So, are there any bugs at all if I were to use Debian Jessie to host the Garry's Mod server? I've heard that vehicles didn't work on Linux servers. Anyways, hopefully that is fixed now.
Vehicles not working was like 2010, there's some strange things here and there that happen related to Gmod but mostly it's just filesystem differences which you will really notice. Bugs had with different distros would be dependency related which you could attempt to resolve with anything but generally aren't fun.
@slayer3032 Ok thanks for all your help!
I've been running Ubuntu for Gmod servers just as stable as windows for half a year now. Also I had crashes on windows but after I swtiched of to Linux they stopped. It's not on the same hardware but addons are the same. You should probably not go for the desktop version like you are suggesting though.
I would take in to consideration how much storage and ram you are getting with your vps first, windows will require more ram and disk space before you even install srcds.
If it's not an issue, then I would go with windows for the ease of management.
I think I will be going with Debian Jessie Server.
Despite using Linux myself (and it runs fine) I'd probably suggest Windows to others - because who knows how much longer facepunch are going to give a damn about Linux? Garry's a Windows man, it was primarily developed for Windows. It might not run quite as smoothly (although it's probably not noticeable) - but seriously, I get the feeling at some point Garry will just pull the plug on Linux updates. If I were garry, that would be the kind of thing I would do.
Does anyone have stats/charts on the actual performance differences between Windows and Linux?
edit: In regards to running Garry's Mod servers of course.

What are you on about
What are you on about
Well, how many guesses do you think you will need before you figure it out?
Garry's already said there's not much money in Linux (clients!) and I wouldn't be surprised if he stopped supporting the server too since it's clearly too different from Windows to bother supporting. Sorry for second-guessing you there Garry, but you know it's true. Now, go and prove me wrong, Mr. Newman...
