So I was thiking about possibility of time travel in Gmod , and then an idea came to me .
How it works :
You are walking somewhere , your friend have done a castle with strong defence you mark this time(saving props that exist) , and in 10 minutes ( If you want ) you time travel into marked time and dissapear for other players . It is something like mixing of layer and duplicator addons : you go into enemies future base place , and destroy props that exist there( All this time you are unseen by players). Then you come back , and castle has a hole in defences , because you destroyed some walls in the past.
I just want too see if this is possible.
So , will anyone try?
Time travel in multiplayer is a mindfuck. You need all player's time to progress at a relative rate. This means that one player can only go backwards in time if all do. And going forward in time is impossible, you can only speed it up.
so you go into the future so you can destroy his base in the past
what
Something like Layers addon , you go on another layer , where are props , that were on the map , when you marked the time . You remove them , and when you get to the future they get removed
Did I write so hard to understand ( seriously, I just wrote pretty fast)
Another idea could be a 3 layered map. Top = future, middle = present, and bottom = past. That way the time travel would technically be possible, considering the fact that you can transport certain players to the time zones (map zones). That is definitely possible.
Doesn't flatgrass have some bug where you could make use of a prop pusher and get into another copy of the map with no props in it. Like another dimension or something?
what?
could you go to the past and interact with the peopl there (including yourself)?
not yourself, but you can interact with other players in the zone.
So are they physicaly playing thereright now? Or is it just copies of them say... 5 minutes ago?
The one thing that would be crazy is multiplayer...
Go back in time, delete one part of someones fort and then what?
In the present time, the players prop would technicaly be removed?
But this is a really good idea.

All sorts of problems here, it's a challenge to save the state of all propr relative to time but what about physics? If you remove an object with something resting on top how long before the item reacts and also would the physics be relative to time aswell?
Entirely impossible. By going 10 minutes in the future, it is absolutely impossible to predict what will players do by then. And by going to the past, you would be playing an scenario which you already played on, only it wouldn't really affect anything because the present is already "happening".
If I realise part of my fort was deleted earlie I would simply rebuild it whilst him being in the past... wait... wut?
But the landoliers would have destroyed/eaten everything ANYWAYS.... (Sorry, old movie reference..)

Actually, I noclipped on the map gm_wireconstruct_rc and went through the wall into a different dimension. It was weird. But it didn't effect normal time of course. I knew it wasn't the skybox since I spawned a prop and it didn't appear in the skybox in the normal part of the map. Weird stuff.
What he's asking for isn't entirely impossible, but the mechanic in which he's asking for it to be performed is.

For the record, there are no "alternate dimensions" in maps. It's the same render space, within a void that you can't interact with.
Ok there is a invisible tool that makes what ever is inside of it when activated invisible and nocolidable. You must be in the radious at the time of activation for you not to be seen or touchable. The owner can make it so he can still see + interact with the props.

But I guess realy this has nothing that much to do with this.

Oh but you could and this would work.
1. Ok so you make a map and make a copy of your hole map and past it under the original in hammer editor.
2. When the map is on and open for all the player every 10 / 20 minutes the admin tells player to stop what they are doing and then they would copy everything they have done and past it into the other part of the map under them.
3. Then the player would make a teleporter wired to a button so if they press if they go to the other part of the map. So they are in an old version.
4. Every 10 / 20 minutes the admin will tell the players to copy ther things and he will remove all the props in the part of the map they were last in and then they move to that one.
Ok so this is not exactly what you wanted but it does work.
A player can press there button and travel to the old / copy of the world.
There would be too many conflicts.
How would you make it so that past time-states interacted with future time-states? You'd need some sort of complex and elaborate pre-emptive code that would make the game unplayable unless you had something like 64 gigs of RAM.
Yeah but. You could make it so your props are wired so if they get moved they move with the future ones. But that would take alot of wire chips and things so :/

But you could just fuel a plane and fly off... Wait that sounds retarded... But then again that's what they did in the movie >.>
For time travel in Garrysmod, would you not need to make copies and animations of what players were doing EVERY MILLISECOND to get it perfect?
Like a video, you just rewind and watch it play, but you have to store every millisecond dynamically on the server.
