• Disabling "Refresh Listings"
    4 replies, posted
For quite some time now, for some reason when I let servers load/refresh upon clicking "Find Multiplayer Game", it limits my internet to where I cannot visit any website or play/load any servers. I can however continue to talk on steam. I'm honestly extremely unsure why this happens, but if anybody has any idea on why it does that, that'd be great. Perhaps maybe you know a way to disable it from automatically refreshing everytime I click "Find Multiplayer Game".
everytime I click "Fine Multiplayer Game".
I thought that button only worked if you were a police officer! Show us your badge! In all seriousness, I believe it has something to do with how the server list works. Your client will take a bunch of IP+ports s provided by the Steam master servers and proceed to query every single IP/port combination to retrieve information about the server such as if it is online, latency, hostname, player count, etc. I'm not entirely sure what the bottleneck is. My theory would be you possibly have networking equipment / software (antivirus firewall?) that can't handle many relatively small in/outcoming packets at once? That's my input at least. That has never happened to me, but I know of a few people who lurk these forums have had this issue and could possibly provide further insight.

It's been an on-going thing for literally years, but they are the only provider I have where I live so it's not like I can just switch, unfortunately. To be honest, I'm not at all surprised it stems back to them, yet again. Thanks for the info.
I get the exact same thing. A fix that I have found is by going to steam Settings > In-Game and switching this option: By default it's Automatic, try lowering it down to 1500~ or even lower if it persists. This should fix it, but the only downside is that refreshing listings take quite a bit longer. It's nothing to-do with download speed etc as I get it with this: The only other fix I found was swapping my superhub to modem mode, even after disabling the firewalls included etc it still happens.

Thank you very much! I kinda figured it had nothing to do with my internet speed, however I felt like I needed to post it incase it was of question.
