(Does mapping count as developing?)
Hello everyone.
I am going to be making a few maps for Garry's Mod soon, and wanted to know if it's possible to use the beautiful map textures in CS:GO in my map. I understand that players would most likely have to mount CS:GO or download the textures elsewhere. Is this practical, or should I stick with Half-Life and CS:S textures?
Thanks for your input.

Personally i would just stick too hl2 textures, theres dozens of beauty's hardly used in maps today, and you dont really wanna limit your userbase too people who have garrysmod and cs:go
Heres a Valve wiki article that advises against Mixing Game Content
That said, you could try extract textures from CS:GO and include them in your map (see the above link for a tool that lets you include assets into maps)

Does mounting CS:GO into Garry's Mod give the client access to the map textures? I assume I will have to manually extract CS:GO content into Hammer.

Yep that will give the client access to the map textures

If you mount CS:GO's content, then it will give you access to the textures, but not the clients. They would have to mount the content as well in order for them to see the textures on your map.
One thing that you could do is simply include all the textures in a workshop addon, and force players to download that when they join your server.
However, you could also compile the textures directly into the map file. It will make the map file much bigger, but players won't need any external materials or models in order to use your map.
Here's an excellent video tutorial on doing just that;

if you want my advice use as much custom or different content that you can within reason. With the ridiculous amounts of maps already out there using basic hl2 content will just drown your map in the sea of so many other unless it's really phenomenal for some other reason. Packing content into the map won't make the file size that much worse unless the texture files are huge or you are using very complex models.
just pack the csgo content you use so less people complain
Thanks everyone! I think I have everything I need to get started.
