Welcome, tryhard filmmakers, time to make some film. ------- Source Filmmaker, what is it? Ever watch a trailer for a valve game, team fortress 2, half life episode1-2, portal, left 4 dead etc..? They were all produced in SFM, it is basically a hybrid video maker where you can record stuff in game, then edit it to make it look fancy and have some sort of story telling added to it, essentially making little mini-series possible.. Basically
The Source Filmmaker (SFM) is the movie-making tool built and used by us here at Valve to make movies inside the Source game engine. Because the SFM uses the same assets as the game, anything that exists in the game can be used in the movie, and vice versa. By utilizing the hardware rendering power of a modern gaming PC, the SFM allows storytellers to work in a what-you-see-is-what-you-get environment so they can iterate in the context of what it will feel like for the final audience.
Is this going to ruin Garry's Mod? Simple answer, NO. People don't buy garry's mod for video making most of the time, this won't ruin it at all, you can still make your crazy 10 second Dr. Breen with a big face screaming "HAX" if you will. What are the system specs? OS: Windows 7 / Vista (Windows 7 64 bit suggested) Processor: 3.0 GHz P4, Dual Core 2.0 (or higher) or AMD64X2 (or higher) Memory: 2GB (4 GB suggested) Hard Disk Space: At least 15 GB of Space Video: NVIDIA GeForce 200 series card or better, or AMD Radeon 3000 series or better (NVIDIA GeForce 400 series or AMD Radeon 5000 series preferred) Monitor: 1366 x 768 (1920 x 1080 suggested) Audio: DirectX 9.0c compatible USB headset with mic (suggested) That's right windows XP users, time to upgrade BUT WAIT, it's invite only at the moment!? Don't panic, this thread can be used to discuss ideas or actually plan stuff at your will. You can also showcase your SFM projects from the leaked version that was shipped with Team Fortress 2 Beta back in 2007. I want more information, where do I go? http://sourcefilmmaker.com/ ------ THREAD RULES: 1. No porn films recorded in SFM to be showcased - seriously, what the fuck is wrong with you 2. Constructive Criticism welcome - if you have something to say about a video or project, say it maturely not in a kid-like manner, examples would be saying the project is "shit" or "gay" without any clear reason, state why you think that 3. Rough sketches are allowed but please for the love of god no 10 second mspaint artwork of your idea, seriously That's about it really.. Source Filmmaker contains a RAW version of meet the heavy, if you feel like pimping it out when you receive it please post your creation! At the moment no clear showcase - I'll make one when it is globally released. Tutorials! What to do - where to start - it's best to start practising when you get this, jumping into big projects with such a new and advanced program than the leaked SFM2007 is probably a bad idea, so the good guys at valve made some tutorials on everything you need to know to create a 6 second short. Step 1 - the basics Step 2 - recording Step 3 - editing Step 4 - Sound Step 5 - Manipulating Step 6 - Time selection Step 7 - Curves Step 8 - Clip Motion and Puppeteering Step 9 - Locks Step 10 - Lipsync Step 11 - Rigging Step 12 - Lighting And now the completed tutorial Happy film making
Some old gold
Alright lets get this thing rolling. the bullshit I did with the old beta SFM. I have not done anything since then because Effort: -1
Added in some tutorials released by valve, but for some reason they're all whitelisted and the embed code is annoying
I fixed the embed codes on the OP.
I've always wanted this. For so many reasons.
Umh , the sound video is the editing video just saying.
I fixed the embed codes on the OP.
I love you
It really sucks that the beta is TF2 only. I have some really awesome ideas I want to try out with Hl2. But oh jesus I want a key so badly.
I want a key, I need to submit stuff to the workshop though. I have to wait to take the survey, I won't be home for a couple weeks. Anyway, glad to see SFM is finally out of the pipeline and is being shown to the public. I remember using the old buggy version, good times.
Gran, the formatting made it impossible to edit anything without it fucking up the YouTube videos. I just spent a good 30 minutes re-editing this
Works for me - don't use preview I suppose.
Thank you so much [editline]28th June 2012[/editline]
Works for me - don't use preview I suppose.
Oh well that was my problem :v:
Reposting from the TF2 thread! I got a key early on and have been working on shit sense 2:00 last night. I've been talking with the Source Filmmaker group chat to keep me company. Behold: Not the best video but hey, it was a first go and I did it in an hour and a half. Infront of a live audience: http://www.livestream.com/gamerman12scavalcadeofcrappyness/video?clipId=pla_23438d09-9a71-4f29-a44b-d585bc6ca18f
And how's the render times ? as far as i know back on the '07 build they were massive if you did more than a scout running across the map
And how's the render times ? as far as i know back on the '07 build they were massive if you did more than a scout running across the map
That video was under 2 minutes. Didn't tell me by fps or fpm.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/PNXaN.jpg[/t] That's actually a pretty cool screenshot, is this going to be like some sort of explosion and they just fly and crash somewhere? If so, looking forward to it. Or you know, this was just a screenshot not an actual project.

Maybe one day I'll create something out of it, when I'm better at animation.
Sorry, just a screenshot. Maybe one day I'll create something out of it, when I'm better at animation.
Oh okay, not a bad screenshot none-the-less, would make an interesting animation.
I've never been in any beta from Valve, wish me luck, they always miss me when it comes to keys.
I've never animated in my life, I don't know why but I feel like this would be the thing to start with. Is this a clever idea or is SFM super complicated?
I've never animated in my life, I don't know why but I feel like this would be the thing to start with.
I've never animated in my life, I don't know why but I feel like this would be the thing to start with. Is this a clever idea or is SFM super complicated?
from watching the tutorials, no.
I've never animated in my life, I don't know why but I feel like this would be the thing to start with. I was able to create very basic cameras and mini scenes in SFM2007, at least that's some experience.
I've done little animation in 3ds max and maya before, so I'm familiar with all the animation aspects, that's why I'm hoping to get in the beta.
Really hope that it's released sometime soon. Don't really know if I'll be getting into the Beta...
Step 3 and Step 4 in the OP are the same video.
I think I made the mistake of taking the Steam Survey on a Mac before realizing it was Windows only
I really need it :(
