Alright everyone, first post here.
I've been working with SFM for a few weeks now, and I'm really enjoying it. I've been doing Half-Life 2 animations, so of course, I leapt at the chance to be able to make a feature-length 'movie' about the Seven Hour War.
Now, because this will be a big project, I do need voice actors for custom lines, mappers, modellers, texturers, anyone that is willing to help me put this thing together.
So, we will have scenes in the pentagon, and of New York being decimated, which needs custom maps. There will be scenes of the military fighting the Combine in their struggle to protect the Earth. There will be a scene of Breen surrendering the Earth (Probably not going to be done with voice acting since he has such a classic voice, but who knows), flashbacks of the Black Mesa Incident, and much much more.
At the moment this is very much just the base idea, but, I hope I can get together a crew here to make this really something unique. Just post here or PM me if you are interested in voice acting, or designing any of the models/textures/maps etc.
Oh my god not another one...
Bring in the lecturers.

Alright, thanks for basing me off other threads and judging this whole project already. I'll have a video of something I've done so far, it'll be up some time soon, when I upload it.
No, I can't model, texture or map myself, so that is why I am posting this thread.

So, you have no past work since you haven't had it long enough to actually produce anything? How can you expect anyone to help you do anything? You need to show progress, and some level of skill. What you're doing is asking people to blindly follow you without any proof of concept.
Alright, thanks for basing me off other threads and judging this whole project already.
Well, it's exactly like the other threads that have come and gone. Wall of text, no images, no script, no past works, and you just signed up to post this thread.
I have produced animations, I said I shall put one up here soon enough, when I get it onto youtube.
There's not much I can do in the way of images if I don't have the maps to work with. I'll get on a starting script for the first few scenes soon, but jesus, I put this thread up to see who was interested in this idea, and later I will open applications for joining the crew.
The idea is so abstract anyone could start it from scratch right now and get more done than you ever will.
You have to show that something is already started, otherwise you're making people think it's something you haven't started yet because you can kill it off anytime.

Suggestion for the future. Even if you can't get images of what the final project will look like, at least have SOMETHING to show. You say you have animations that haven't been posted yet so I'll see how those look before I go all idea's guy lecture on you, but for the future I suggest you have something to show from the start instead of saying "I'll show you soon"

This. You even said that you don't have a script written yet, just the base idea. Don't come to others looking for help unless you have something to show them

I can't start it without the models and maps. I can do some of the script, yes, but I can't actually start it without those.

You can start off with placeholders, and storyboarding.
And scripts are usually done before anything.
We're done here. Sorry.

Alright, farewell. Thanks for the input.

At the risk of this being off topic, wasn't there a thread for this kind of thing at one point?

I remember there being a "get inspired" thread but I think it was in the Gmod Section not here in Source Filmmaker.
What do you say, would a thread like this be of good use here?

No need for the snarky comment, a video of my previous small project will be up here, in a couple of days.
I've been using SFM sinceJuly 29, 2012, I'd suggest you get some experience behind you and not just two weeks.
Try and show people a portfolio first of what you've done and what you can do.

I didn't say two weeks, by a few weeks I meant over a month, but yeah, I'm going to get some more stuff behind me to put up, and probably create a new thread since this one has just been shat on.
well it has been a couple of days, where's your video?

Not our fault you come here with a project requiring shitloads of work without providing any skills or stuff to show.
Not our fault you come here with a project requiring shitloads of work without providing any skills or stuff to show.
This. If you want to set up a group project, you'll need reasonably amounts of proof that you can actually contribute in some way beyond "setting up the wiki" or whatever it is Idea Men claim to do nowadays. The last guy to set up something big could point to this and this, and I'm pretty sure his project's only going to be 5-10 minutes or so! Even Valve consider a feature-length SFM video to be way, way too much work.
Start small.
I'm going to be unusually generous (which is saying a lot under the circumstances).
Make me a 30 second tech-demo of what you are capable of.
If you are any good, I will convince a mapping friend of mine to make a pentagon map for you.
I must know you can deliver on your end of this project of yours.

Alright, I'll make some action sequences, some face posing stuff perhaps and lip sync. Particles too, not sure what else.
Livewire has a good point. I've been working on making films for most of my life, I'm slowly building up to feature length but I'm nowhere near ready yet. I was recently given a fairly decent budget to make a 25 minute SFM film for Oracle Software and that didn't turn out so well because I've never made an animated film even close to that length before and I basically under-estimated just how much work it would be. So even when you have a reasonable budget at your disposal, it's still very difficult to make anything that's worth watching.
In another case I got too ambitious when SFM first came out and wrote a 22 page TF2 movie script. It's usually about 1 minute per page so that would probably be 22 minutes long. Well it's been over a year later and I only have about the first 5 minutes completed in rough form, and only the first minute close to completion. Again, I under-estimated the sheer amount of work it takes to make something decent and without any kind of budget, it's very hard to keep people working on a project for free.
BTW, I've been making my living in the video post-production industry for the past 5 years, so even with my experience, it's still very difficult to make a decent animated film of any length, even with a budget.
My recommendation would be to write the script (btw you shouldn't really be doing anything else until you have a REALLY solid script, or else the whole project is doomed before production even starts) in such a way that you can tell the story through a series of self-contained episodes. That way you GREATLY reduce the workload and you still get to tell your story. If the first episode is well received and people want more, then you can consider your options and potentially do another episode. That's what I'm going to do with my TF2 project.
Why are you trying to make a 'feature-length' movie when you have had a few weeks experience in SFM? Not only would it be stupidly difficult even if you could get people to help you but chances are it wouldn't be very good since you don't have enough experience.
People think working with SFM is like playing with LEGO-Figurines.
People think working with SFM is like playing with LEGO-Figurines.
You think I think that? No. I know all the work that has to be put in to it. I know that this will take months on end, I understand the experience I need - which is why I am making a few more videos and in between I am working on the script for this. Is there really a need to keep revisiting this thread to post snarky comments?
Ummmm...feature length won't take "months". If you're working with a team of animators that number 6, it'll take about a year for each animator to finish their share if you're really going for "feature length". For professional quality animation, it'll take about 10 hours to finish 1 second of animation. If you have 12 animators working on this non-stop, it'll theoretically take around 6 months to finish a 90 minute feature.

Really? Just...really? Months on end, I mean by that, a lot of time, and I don't mean for someone to come along and try to be all mathsy and say that I'm wrong. I'm sorry, but that's how you came across, and when I said that, I meant a long time, months on end can mean years. They're still months.
The indication that I got was that you were imagining it to take months rather than years. I did not mean to imply that you were wrong. I simply meant to give the numbers of how long actual animation could take given optimum circumstances. Personally, I'd suggest you to stop acting defensive. People on here tend to be rather jaded when it comes to the words "feature length", and it won't help your case to bite people's heads off for biting your head off. People tend to not get along whenever they are without a head.

If you send me details and stuff... we can talk about it :D
I'm still waiting on the preview videos by the way, when do you think you've got something to show?
