• Custom model looks normal in-game, but has semi-transparent textures in SFM and renders

I downloaded an improved model of the Sniper's camper van from 'Meet the Sniper', but when importing into SFM some of the textures are semi-transparent and look like this: And it looks even worse when the Sniper model is sitting in it, you can see his legs etc through the front of the van. Does anyone know how to fix this or had this problem too?
This is an issue with Ambient Occlusion. I don't know what causes it, but I've seen it in a lot of custom models. To temporarily fix, disable AO.

I've had this problem before. To fix it, you'll have to open up each of the model's material files and remove all the lines that apply $phong to the material.

I'll have a play around with the VMTs and post back in a min! EDIT: It works perfectly! Thanks so much dude :)
Its a bad work-around, but I guess its better then transparent models. Some models are still transparent (on some maps).

Is there any way to fix the phong issue?
i turned off ao the other day and i still saw the transparentness...on some models.
Didn't Valve just release an update fixing the problem where AO would make some models semi-transparent ?
This still happens to me on models with $alphatest.
they fixed it with the latest update
they fixed it with the latest update
Bunch of models still bugged, even the camper in the OP.
the latest update did not fix the issue turns out the only real way to solve this right now is to turn off ao and you have to make sure the setting is off even if you disable the advanced rendering option AO will still be enabled if you do not unclick it. then the models should be fine, what i did however is just find a replacement it happend to me when trying to do my video of mario in a car down a road, the car was transparent. i decided to just replace it with another car that did not have this problem. hopefully theyll fix it "for reals" soon.
The proper fix for this problem has already been posted earlier in the thread.
I've had this problem before. To fix it, you'll have to open up each of the model's material files and remove all the lines that apply $phong to the material.

The proper fix for this problem has already been posted earlier in the thread.
If you do this, you won't see AO on them.
don't remove the lines that apply phong that's a dumb thing to do just add $ambientocclusion 0
Not sure if anyone's still trying to track this bug down instead of waiting for them to fix it. Norpo did a port of the Illusive Man a while ago that originally had the ao bug. http://facepunch.com/threads/1171984 Then released a fix which updated just all the models files with ao now working http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1171984&p=35258045&viewfull=1#post35258045
I really wish there was a fix for this that didnt involve disabling phong or turning off AO, I have like 5 models I really wanna use but they all have this issue and it'd look like shit without ambient occlusion
I wonder what makes tf2 models so special that AO works for them
I wonder what makes tf2 models so special that AO works for them
Except some still don't (degreaser, sapper) and loads of custom models still do.
$AmbientOcclusion 0 Add that to your transparent vmt it should work.
