Hey everyone,
I just wanted to talk quickly about the title of this thread, a model repository for Source Filmmaker.
I'm completely new to using the Source engine for anything but playing games. Before Source Filmmaker, I've never made a 3d model for it, never made a texture, never made a map. Then SFM came out and my interest in using it has risen as it has for many others. Some people are completely new and fresh to it, and some people have been around since the beginning. The point is, there's a new community forming for SFM, and we need a central place for people to go to get resources for SFM. Maps, models, scripts, whatever.
Garry's mod has been out for years and there are people that can make things for it with their eyes closed. Garrysmod.org hosts all of these things for GM (albeit in a disorganized manner), and a lot of things there work in SFM. (Or work with a little tweaking.) There have been models that I've wanted to use from there but I can't access them because I don't have Garry's Mod. That could be easily fixed by buying Garry's Mod, but why would I? I have SFM already, and I have it for free! I don't think anyone should have to pay for a program they're not even going to use just to gain access to a free model.
I don't believe it's that much different to make something for SFM than it is to make for GM. So I think a more centralized and organized place to gather resources for SFM would be great!
I just wanted to put that out there just in case there were some people interested in making that happen.
So in essence you're suggesting an SFM equivalent of garrysmod.org? Makes sense; having a repository of public-domain assets like models, skins, maps, audio, etc, can come in handy for making stuff, be it Gmod or SFM.
This was suggested in one of my threads. I think it's a good idea.
I tottaly support this . Cause putting up SFM only maps on garrys mod and haveing ppl ask why it isnt working could get annoying
I was thinking about something like this yesterday. A repository of more than just maps and models- it could be extended to other SFM-specific items such as animations, rig scripts and rendering settings.
It wouldn't be trivial to run and it would cost money. Plus there would be an administrative overhead with it; it would also have to be carefully monitored to avoid people putting content they don't own in it. I don't think it would be appropriate to allow people to mass-upload stuff from GarrysMod.org, for example.
Well, you could have a rule in which if you got it off garrysmod.org and it works without any tweaking, don't bother uploading here. Or maybe getting permission from the person who made / ported said model.
This would be handy since I am working on a SFM small train for the engineer.
I guess a small upload site with file listing would be ideal for this, something where you can set a screenshot, name, description then upload a zip with the files in it and the site prints out to you a url for where it can be downloaded from while also having a search page.
I can see if I can get something like that in place if you guys want.
Well, considering that everything you might use in SFM might also be useful in garry's mod, maybe it will be enough to update existing stuff on garrysmod and add a "SFM compatible" tag, icon or whatever.
This requires an ok from garry, though ;)

It would be nice if things could be categorized as well. To make searching for things easier. A models section with sub-categories for weapons, characters etc., maps section, scripts section etc... It would be best to keep things as organized as possible.
MOST of the models in garrysmod.org will work with Source Filmmaker its just the maps you have to worry about.

But the point is for people to be able to get things for SFM without the need for access to Garry's Mod. These models are being made for free, people without Garry's Mod should not have to pay for Garry's Mod just to use free models. That's the point of having a site dedicated to SFM in the first place. :)
Garrysmod.org requires you to own Gmod to access the models because it's a great way to encourage people to buy Gmod. I wouldn't want us to dilute the value of that resource because it's a good one for Garry and the Garry's Mod community. Hell, we're talking about this on his forum. :)
An SFM-focused repository is a great idea. I just don't want to see it positioned as the alternative to garrysmod.org, because that's not really fair to garry or gmod.

Most of the models on Garrysmod.org have eyes that aren't functioning in SFM. Some don't even have facial flexes.

I don't want to take away anything from the Garry's Mod community, but as SFM grows, so does it's community as well. I personally view the GM community and the SFM as two separate entities, although they revolve around similar interests. I believe the SFM community deserves a central place for them to go to find the resources they need. I don't feel it's fair to ask SFM users to buy a piece of software just to gain access to resources they want to use in their projects. Especially when some of those resources such as certain models still need to be modified to work properly in SFM.
What I'm thinking of is a place where resources are made specifically with SFM in mind. For instance, I'm a 3D modeler. I made the lightsaber that I used in my animation. I learned all the steps needed to take a model I made myself and have it work in SFM. Now I found out later that there's a lightsaber pack in GM that works in SFM, but I wouldn't have had access to them anyway because I don't own GM. If there was a SFM resource site, I could upload my own personal model for anyone with SFM to use regardless of them owning GM (and they shouldn't have to).
I'm sure there's going to be a small clash of ideas here because some of these resources can be shared between the two programs, but unfortunately that can't be avoided. I'm not trying to take anything away from the GM community, but SFM users need a place of their own to go to get their own resources. :)
I wouldn't be surprised if Valve did a Steam Workshop thing for SFM.
I think an SFM specific site is the way to go. Right now everything SFM related is in its early stages, that's going to change. There's no reason to link SFM with anything else, such as Gmod. Using Gmod resources is only a temporary necessity to add variety to SFM, that's the only connection. Once the community has started creating resources just for SFM no one will look anywhere else for things to use.

Progress so far, basing the styling off the official filmmaker site just to keep the theme valve has going.

Wow! That looks really good! I think "depot" is missing the "T" ;)

I'd love to see those saber models; I'm doing an animation that uses lightsabers, heh.

Also, anyone else like the names SFMrepo.com or SFMhub.com
Maybe you can make it look like theres stuff scatterd around ?Like camera film rolls , cameras , props etc .
It is a depo so it would fit it (its just a suggestion though)

I've seen your WIPs, they're looking pretty cool. You've also seen my animation of the Medic Jedi (the one where the Medic is concentrating trying to use the Force to move the Lightsaber). :) Send me an email and I'll be sure to send my Lightsaber right on over to you! mcflygold[at]yahoo[dot]com
I recommend having a blurb that you have to agree to in order to upload that says something like the following:
* You own the copyright or have been granted permission by the holder of the copyright to upload this data.
* You acknowledge that by placing it in this repository that it will be made available to anyone who wishes to access it under a Creative Commons (CC) license (or whatever other license this system will use, I like CC myself).
Will it be acceptable with this to have adult content or should that be verboten also?

Email sent.

Is this ok for file listing, mainly asking as rows of 3 was a tight fit.
The browse page will also look pretty much like it but with a search box and pages.

There will be license types to pick from a dropdown when uploading, was already planning that being a feature as people like max like to upload their work with licenses which require you to credit them (and you fucking well should if you edit anyone elses work).
I don't see any issues with adult content but it'll be filtered out by default.

If you can get some fitting images of them on a transparent background then sure.
holy shit, a resource site that can actually have admins!
Can you make it so it registers what's in the uploader?
Like dmx files can be "SFM Project/Animation" while zip files are "SFM Map(s)\Model(s)"
Email sent.
I'll send it over to you as soon as I put my daughter to bed and zip up the files.

Possible but not really ideal, see what happens.

I think that's something that should be left to the uploader.
I wouldn't jump too far ahead, domains are like the last thing and I don't really like hub or repo.
