Hello everyone, TEAM PAWNDERS dropping in with a very fine ass tutorial on how to make website designs that are not horrible atrocities of mankind. To be honest, it's very simple, all you need to do is follow this list:

Do not use stripes. I know you may think they're "cool," but they're not, they're overused, stupid, and an eyefuck. I mean that literally, whenever I see stripes I feel like I'm being skullfucked by a big burly black man.

Stop trying to copy garry's designs, since you're just making things worse

Set a default font since nobody likes Times New Roman.

Know when to use drop shadows or rounded corners, don't go around sticking rounded corners and drop shadows everywhere or I will find you, and I will kill you.

NO FaM FAM FAM ICONS. NO, NO, NO, NO. NO.

Use common sense, unlike these people:
var browser;
if (navigator.appName.match('Microsoft Internet Explorer'))
{
document.write('<link rel="stylesheet" href="style_IE.css" type="text/css" />');
}
else
{
document.write('<link rel="stylesheet" href="style.css" type="text/css" />');
}
So hey, what happens if I have Javascript disabled in my browser?

Don't be LUADuck or ShadowUK, or be Swedish. Your website will turn out looking like shit.
Thank you for reading this amazing tutorial, I hope this will help you all in not making websites that look like fuck terrible shit almighty fuck fuck fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff
This isn't a tutorial, it's a rant.

What's wrong with Fam Icons? I don't use them, but what's wrong?
What's wrong with Fam Icons? I don't use them, but what's wrong?
that's the problem, everyone uses them and they're so boring now

I don't know about you, but the login image looks pretty much like one from the Silk iconset to me.
Where are the other icons from by the way?
Actually the whole MyBB-based Lamepunch forums were a pretty shitty attempt at copying Garry's style
hey this site uses stripes
hey this site uses stripes
And?
tutorial sucks since i'm swedish
Good points there. I have some more
Use JPEGs for everything, they have a smaller size.
Use Javascript dropdowns as much as possible. This way users only see navigation when they want to.
Use small/pixel fonts so you can fit more content in a smaller space.
Don't use colour either. Colour just distracts the eye from actual content.
The Silk icons are good.
Oh and your tutorial sucks
Don't be LUADuck
I love you will you marry me?

Serifs? In my webpages? No, man.
For the people that have no idea what I'm talking about: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serif
And yeah more of a rant but still oddly entertaining.
I don't see anything wrong with serif fonts. It's really a case by case basis depending on the tone you want to set for your site. Like if you want a serious site, maybe you'd have serif for your page header and maybe even your post titles. Sans-serif make a serious site look too casual, but it's an eye sore in huge blocks. It's a trade off you have to choose based on what you are going to be doing. I'd probably go with a sans-serif for stories and such and keep serif for titles and such.
Jpegs are going to go the way of the dodo soon. PNG is going to take over in the next 5 years. Sure they are bigger, but you don't have any signs of compression, and can easily do transparency which makes for some nice layouts without having to do kooky javascript and css tricks. Plus, barely anyone uses dial up anymore.
You can't say you won't use serif fonts if you're even considering being a web developer or designer. Even though you may have a burning passion to hate any serif font you may see, you'r client may want that font. Serif fonts look just as good, if not better, than sans-serif in certain conditions. Serif fonts are actually better to use when reading very long and large articles. Read around and you'll find plenty of tutorials on how to combine or use serif/sans-serif fonts together :3.

1.) No. Just because they're smaller, doesn't mean they're better. Jivemasta is right, PNG are the way you need to go. Unless the webpage is going to be made of insane graphics and very very graphic heavy. In those cases just use JPEG, but only if you don't lose quality and still have a smaller file size. Its complicated and changes from file to file.
2.) No. Depending on the audience everyone may not have javascript enabled. In which case they'll be left with no navigation. You either need a fallback option to display html links, or just use a maka pure html/css dropdown list in the first place :p.
3.) Just use Arial/Helvetica/Geneva/Verdana. You have to use a font everyone has already or is "web-safe" otherwise the browser will default back to its default font and make your website look retarded lol.
4.) Color attracts the eye, use it to grab attention and add detail. Rapidweaver is a good example of this:

And you?
point is most people on facepunch are terrible designers and should go die
From your point of view maybe. This place is primarily composed of pubescent teenagers anyway, what were you expecting? Its not about getting it right every try either, everything you make form now until the day you die and get skullfucked by maggots will have problems with it, its up to other people, fellow designers, normal people, and the stupids to point out these problems to you and for you to fix them accordingly. Design is a mix between art and a science, so you have to use the science part as a foundation and constantly make the artistic part to suit the times. Seeing that you think nobody here has any talent, you obviously have no knowledge yourself of the field. Before you judge, why don't you take a deeper look into things. Its really immature and ignorant of you to even bother otherwise. :3
thx for the tip
how do i code web?
that's the problem, everyone uses them and they're so boring now
Let's use something completely different that no one knows about which completely spoils the design of my site, just to be different.
Piss of troll.

Umm yeah I pretty much agree with this.
As for the serif fonts, it's not bad to use them once in a while but overusing them (especially Times New Roman, damn) is just terrible eyehurt.

Sure, but I will forever love Pawnstick for the XSS. Hint hint.
GIF is still useful for small icons and images that simply use a small variety of colors.

No it isn't.
Yes it is. Sometimes it's smaller and especially web graphics don't use more than 256 colors that often.
