Microsoft has created a contest called Code7 in which you can get prizes (not a lot) for creating a native program for Windows that utilizes a new feature in Windows 7. For more info you can check it out here:

Prizes include:
$17,777
PDC09 Ticket.
HMm... interesting name
"Windows 7 Developer Contest", How expected... Why can't they just have something easier, such as a massive LAN party, and the winner gets $17,777 rather than a coding contest.

Uh what?
Sounds like a smart ploy. I am guessing they really mean, "Write an application that only works in Windows 7." I could be wrong, but hey it's smart on their part.

Fall for the .net lock-in. :downs:
Just like cigarette companies, get 'em hooked while they're young.

That utilizes a new feature in Win7. I assume it would be Win7 only.

They do this so their programmers work on Windows and the community works on a program that uses a feature of Windows 7. They can then show everyone the Windows 7 application and hook people in and saying "Look what our cool operating system can do" and say "This was created by a regular old windows user".
It is a double plot to showcase and show that windows is user friendly.
All without them lifting a finger.

superbar
you *must* slap a superbar system onto an MDI app
cool, I've always wanted to see the pussy cat dolls live
they exclude people from Cuba,Iran, Sudan, North Korea and.. Quebec?
I think $77,777 would be a more appropriate prize.
An invitation to visit the Microsoft Campus in Redmond, WA, to meet members of the Windows 7 development team (winner is responsible for all travel related costs)
Cheap bastards.
Guyze this app doesn't have to be Windows 7 only. You could use the progress bar on the taskbar, or make tabs in a web browser show up in the superbar previews, and maybe even have a refresh button under each thumb or something like that.
This is like the "use Internet Explorer and win $10k" thing, our free systems are so shit we have to pay people to use them.

Laws. Almost every single contest is this way.

Damn Canadian terrorists
So you only get paid $17,777 while they will make money off your app for the next few years?
Jesus Christ, most of the people in this thread are stupid fanboys.

That's the opposite of fanboys.

What are we fanboys for, then? I don't even think the lively arguments we get about style count as fanboyism.

Fanboy of what? I don't love or hate microsoft...
I'll make a program that opens IE and takes you to Meatspin.
Will I get sued?
Somebody in this thread needs to learn what fanboy actually means.
Then it overheats the processor.

Embargoes. Not sure about Quebec/Canada.
Garry could probably enter Botch if he implemented Dx11.
