• Whats the deal with free shell access?

Free shells - some providers make them look very suspicious - i mean you can actually run your own stuff on them? Isn't that dangerous as fuck for the hoster? Why would any hoster do this? Are free shells even any good for hosting stuff? Like cross server chats for gmod? Google didn't really help me either, so i'm asking you, fp.
I doubt any web company in their right mind would use a free shell, I'm guessing a free shell would give everyone root access which is really dumb. There are jailed shells: http://powerofnetworking.com/2010/09/05/root-jail-on-linux/ According to that, the people are allowed to do certain tasks on their jail cell. Some people just enjoy installing manually.
