hey guys, I recently got the Idea of becoming a VPS host and seeing as there are some here I thought this would be the best place to ask.
I was thinking that the standard setup was using WHMCS, SolusVM and OpenVZ/ Xen is this true?
also how does automatic provisioning work? is it something inbuilt into those programs or will i have to make some scripts to make it happen?
finally on this dedi [url]http://www.serversaustralia.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=19&Itemid=29[/url] (the cheapest one with RAM upgrade) how many clients could I fit onto a node with a Xen 128mb RAM / 5GB storage 50GB bandwidth plan.
PS its going to be australian (from the link above) so what do you think would be reasonable pricing, $6 a VPS?

I don't mean to be brash, but if you need to ask Facepunch how to set yourself up as a VPS host, you're probably not going to be a very good one.
I'd recommend experimenting in VMWare, getting a test VPS hosting setup going and then trying to start a business out of it.
yeah, I have a Linux box at home and I'm going to get everything tested and working on that before I even consider hiring a dedicated server.
In that case, you might want to talk to Nick from Fanatical VPS. He's Fizzadar round these parts.
OpenVZ/Xen + SolusVM + WHMCS + a lot of Linux knowledge and know-how + patience + marketing skill (which is where I lack the most, and am learning).
Oh, and a target market, that's probably the most important bit which is relevant to everything.
You're likely to have less problems with OpenVZ than Xen if you've never used virtualisation before, and that's a good thing since you're unlikely to know how to fix them.
Edit: On that server, I'd say maybe 15 instances of that configuration. Of course, this totally depends and it's a skill you have to learn if you're going OpenVZ, overselling is pretty much part of the business plan on OpenVZ.
im gouing to need to load 20-25 vpss per node to remain profitable.
You'll never get decent VPS plans with those servers B/W offerings.
I see your point, data in Australia cost to much to start a profitable VPS hosting company. i have had a look around and most costs are reasonable but BW of 1TB a month seems to be going for $300/m by itself.

You're not much competition.
People only ever get Australian servers if they want the low latency, otherwise it's much cheaper just to get an overseas server.
i have scrapped the idea of doing australian vpss now, the isp backed companies can do deal that i cant even dream of.

It really isn't. When shit really hits the fan you've gotta be ready.
For example:
You go smooth sailing, pretty much entirely autopilot for two weeks. Then all three servers start suffering the same issues, random 5 minute drop outs 24/7, neither the DC, SolusVM or you can work out what the issue is. To fix it, you end up pulling a straight 36 hour session at the desk until you find the issue and clear up the mess.
Stupid OpenVZ kernel was borked, and the drop outs only effected the main IP and sporadically other IP's at random, not a fun weekend.
