I recently bought a VPS x4 from Hosting24.com, this was to run my project's and websites. I paid on December the 29th, its now the 02/01/2014, i message them asking whats up, and this is the chatlog.
06:00 Roland P.: Hello and welcome to Hosting24.com, how may I help You? 06:00 Lewis:Hi, I'd like a refund on my VPS server please, I've been waiting 3 days for it to be set up. 06:00 Roland P.: Account cancellations are processed on our ticketing system only. Please open a new ticket from "Help Desk" section in members area, requesting to cancel the account and we will reply You about the account status as soon as possible. 06:01 Lewis: I have, and you have not replied to me. 06:01 Roland P.: Please provide ticket ID. 06:01 Lewis: You told me again to wait 24 hours. 06:01 Lewis: #1590390 06:02 Roland P.: Could you possibly open a new ticket, if you want to cancel your account. 06:03 Lewis: Why have you not activated my server? You've had 3 days to do it, and every time I sent a message you told me to wait another 24 hours, I have given you $59 here and was going to continue it for months, but now I've been waiting way to long for this service, how long will you make me wait when I can goto another vender and get it done instantly? 06:05 Roland P.: We have reached VPS servers limit on the cloud, we are waiting for our administrators to add more VPS servers. 06:05 Roland P.: We are sorry for the inconveniences. Your VPS should be activated within 24 hours. 06:06 Roland P.: Anyway, if you want to cancel your account, please open a ticket. 06:06 Lewis: You've told me that 4 times already, I'm sorry but I'll be taking my money back and finding some other place. 06:06 Lewis: Maybe you should not let me buy it in the first place, if you are as you say 'full'. 06:09 Roland P.: We are deeply sorry for this issue. 06:11 Lewis: The waiting period for the server has cost my business a lot in expense, I hope you do realize this. Could you have just just told me this 3 days ago? 06:17 Roland P.: Have you tried to contact us? 06:17 Lewis: Yes, a lot of times.. 06:19 Roland P.: Our staff should notify you about this situation. I'm sorry once again if we mislead you. 06:20 Lewis: When can I expect my refund? 06:21 Roland P.: You wil need to open a ticket if you want to cancel your account. Our sales manager will get back to you within 1 business day. 06:22 Lewis: I have done this, if its any later than 1 day, I will simply reverse the transaction on paypal, as well as call you out as scammers, i don't believe for one second that a web-hosting firm like your self would leave a customer for 4 days and he has to nag you for simple information that should be publicly available. 06:24 Lewis: You forget that I too work in the hosting business, and I know that this stuff does not take long, as well as running a VPS server though a cloud, and allowing users such as my self to purchase items which obviously don't exist at this present time, and instead of you telling me, i had to message you 4 times to get a reply that I had to wait another 24 hours just to tell me the same thing. 06:26 Lewis: And I will be telling all the customers currently on my network as well as my community that you are not trustworthy resellers, how rubbish does your communication have to be? You sold me something which does not exist, and you rely simply on the input of your 'Admins', and on the basis that I get my server when they add them, i could be waiting for weeks maybe even days, when I can get a cheaper servers which hosts more operating systems, and deals a better customer support who actually know what they are doing, I'm very displeased with your services and this is strictly unprofessional.
To sum it up, I gave them $59 to host my VPS, and they sell me a service they do not currently have, and take 4 days to tell me this. Do not buy from these guys.
2:55Roland P.: All VPS servers are activated within 24 hours. 22:55Joe Smith: ah so its not instant? 22:56Joe Smith: may i ask why? everyone else is instant 22:56Roland P.: It is not instant setup. 22:56Roland P.: We fully understand that you would prefer instant activation, we would also like to active each account after we receive a payment, but our payment processors (2checkout.com and Paypal.com) are making various fraud tests to each payment, so first we need to get payment approval from our payment processor and then we activate your account.
Yeah the guy didn't even admit they were out of stock until I pressured him. They're pretty much misleading all of their clients right now. I would not recommend that host at all.
but our payment processors (2checkout.com and Paypal.com) are making various fraud tests to each payment, so first we need to get payment approval from our payment processor and then we activate your account.
Dunno what they're doing but the only time paypal is delayed for us is when it's an echeque payment. Oh yeah - I'd be careful about using a paypal dispute to get a refund. Intangible services are not covered by paypal's buyer protection, so all it takes is them to call paypal and say "intangible" and you've lost your money. Better waiting for their billing department to get back to you

I still have some 'accounts' on their service, now I need to look for a VPS vendor.

Afterburst is run by myself and Fizzadar; and darksoul69 is involved in RamNode

This is why I always try to work with bigger companies like Digital Ocean and Linode. Hosting is not something to skimp on. Every time I've picked a host because it was cheaper I've had issues at some point. Working with larger companies also has the advantage of knowing they're going to be around a bit longer than a company that's run by a few guys from their houses (no offense to those who are doing that)

Linode however - you're quite right, they've earned their place among well known and trusted brands.

Where did you read that? [editline].[/editline] Just checked and there's $20 free credit coupons going around - 4 months on their lowest plan for free, for anyone.
This doesn't feel safe as I have a VPS from Hosting24. My VPS was setup in an instant though. What I can say though, and I apologize for my choice of words here, but Hosting24's support is fucking terrible. I hate the fact that they put up this wall of "We're so sorry, but fuck you and open a ticket". That's pretty much all they have to say when you talk to them over their live chat, whatever my issue would be they would always tell me to open a ticket instead of just solving the issue. Going through the whole ticket process and waiting for a shitty response for 4 hours saying "Have you tried restarting?" that doesn't help at all is just wasting my time. And time is money. I'm thinking of swapping hosts soon, just gotta get some work done. Any hosts that you can suggest? Preferably one that's developer friendly and has a support that doesn't act like Hosting24.

[editline].[/editline] Just checked and there's $20 free credit coupons going around - 4 months on their lowest plan for free, for anyone.
I've found numerous quotes from employees saying the business is profitable. They have enough business that assuming giving out 2 free months is enough to make them not profitable is silly. I think you are misinterpreting the situation. Venture capital is for helping businesses expand more rapidly than they would be able to do just from being bootstrapped (or for funding big initial investment for certain kinds of businesses, a web host doesn't really need a huge initial investment, so we can safely assume that their venture capital is for growth). Using venture capital to allow you to run deals like that as a marketing tactic (which it obviously is, meaning this stuff is coming out of a marketing budget and not just a "Lol lets giv discount!" fund) does not, by any means, mean that the company is not profitable. It is kind of short-sighted to assume that they haven't run the numbers on how many people stick around past the first 2 months to decide whether the promotion is a good idea or not... $20 isn't a lot to pay to acquire a new customer for a recurring service like web hosting where, in all likelihood, after your initial setup is done, you probably aren't going to want to switch to another VPS just because your coupon ran out. Their pricing is competitive enough that they don't need to worry much about people going "shit this is too expensive now, peace!".
The real issue with DigitalOcean is that they've proven themselves to be incompetent time and time again.
The real problem with DigitalOcean is that they claim a Droplet (VPS) can be setup within 55 seconds of payment. I tested mine and it was 26 seconds.... It's hardly something to boast about.
Does anybody use amazon? We use it at work for a a web application and it seems pricey, I wonder what experiences you have had with it.
Does anybody use amazon? (edit) Worth mentioning he had 2 instances, one for mysql and one for the webgame itself.
Does anybody use amazon? We use it at work for a a web application and it seems pricey, I wonder what experiences you have had with it.
It can get super pricy if you don't need an eye on it.
I recently stumbled upon a ridiculously cheap VPS provider if you're still looking. BlueVM
Only con is they use harddrives rather than SSDs - haven't really noticed and slow I/O though. [editline]4th January 2014 at 03:03PM[/editline] shit thought this would automerge - sorry for the bump :(

It's hard to put in to perspective what that goes into without divulging secrets, but it's way more than it should be and way more than some of the other services they pay for. And by business unit, I mean one project that's barely started to be sold/used. I guess it really depends on how you're using it, though.

Cancellation request that I issued didn't happen so I had to open a ticket about it and they did finally shut it down but I found out they were still taking money from me after the service was cancelled.
If you used PayPal then it will have been your fault for not cancelling the subscription.
No, it's the hosts fault for not properly canceling the subscription through the paypal API when a user cancels it.
No, it's the hosts fault for not properly canceling the subscription through the paypal API when a user cancels it.
Pretty sure if they use WHMCS it doesn't support auto subscription cancellations.
