As you may or may not know, I know fuck all coding. There was once a game that was basically The Sims with online elements on it, the game got changed to "free" status in early 2008 and closed in late 2008 because they couldn't afford it lmao.
Basically a good friend of mine has found the setup files on The Sims online on EA servers, although it not being the latest version, it is good enough.
Is it possible to make a server out of a client only and something that connects to a server that is there but gets rejected because they "Deactivated" everybodys subscriptions?
If so, is there anyone up for making a server for it?
Download is here, perfectly legit download:

Thanks
I am posting this in the video game section AND programming because I was unsure which is more suitable
Hire a reverse engineer.
Sims online sucked.

There were many players who loved it, there is already a petition with 400 people signed up, when they introduced custom content, it made the game so much better.
The games code run off a pretty old server so recreating it wouldn't exactly be too hard if you have the right knowledge, which I don't unfortunately.
Correct me if i'm wrong, wouldn't you have to have a server running currently to sniff the packets and offsets and all that? Or does that just make it easier..

sniffing and guessing = harder and more work
[editline]05:58PM[/editline]
Also you are going to need more then 400 people for some reverser to care enough to bring it back.
Sniffing is harder? Sniffing tells you what values it's expecting. Guessing and sniffing do not go together.
Agent do you know what you are talking about? Anyways with sniffer you have to get the client/server to send every single packet. That would be a freaking nightmare. Also with sniffing you have no idea how the program is using the packets so you have to guess what everything is...
That cleared up some of my confusion. I thought you meant guessing the packets with out any info on how they were formatted. With the sniffer you know how the format of the packets that have been sent and received.

What sniffer are you talking about? There is no universal sniffer that magically structures/names every packet.
I just mean how to structure a packet. Let's say you click a button, you can see how the sent packet it formed.
How does a sniffer show you how it is formed?
It gives you the raw data that was sent.
So you magically know what every byte in the packet is?
No, but it works a shitload better than guess 'n' check.
What!?! I am lost at what you are trying to get at. Using is packet sniffer is guessing what everything is...
no you should make a motor city online private server. fucking ea.
wurm online private server
It gives you the raw data that was sent.
But raw data is all you have, no have no idea what it means.
Shouldn't you just be able to host one, theoretically through Hamachi?

You don't just host a MMORPG.

Petitions do fuck all.
[editline]06:14PM[/editline]
"Oh my! There is a petition of 400 people wanting to play this game! Better put our money at risk and satisfy the needs of these people!".
No, it doesn't happen.
Petitions work, people are just horrible at implementing them.

Please show me one online petition aimed at game developers that has ever succeeded.
Make a website with a donation box and buy The Sims Online after 15 years.
That's something we can help with.
It's probably cheaper than hiring a team of reverse engineers
