Couldn't think of a good title. Anyways, I'm in programming class in my school. For some reason, they are teaching Q Basic... aka MS-DOS. Any reason for teaching this? The other class, same grade, is learning java. Wtf.
That's really sad :eng99:
Mate, I'm sorry.
In my computer science class we're learning Turing. But if someone is good enough they can switch to something else like C++ after the first few units
Wow, I remember we were taught QBasic in year 5 or 6. Awful language to program in. I pity you. :<
MS.....DOS? Really? Isn't that pretty much dead? That's like teaching Latin in schools. Oh wait.
Turtle graphics in the years after that was kind of fun though :v:
Oh man, I have very fond memories of turtle graphics back in the day. That shit was amazing.
Heck, I think I'll take on a turtle graphics interpreter as my next project :P
In my software development class we've done 1/2 the year on excel, and the other half on VB.net, Delphi and C#. If I continued the subject next year we do a year on Delphi.
Basic... I learnt in ten minutes, YA Basic came with a disc that came with ps2.. It's barely worth calling a language. It's plain dumb to teach it, it's the sort of novelty you'd teach if you were a relief programming teacher.. Teaching it as your main subject is dumb.. If the other class is doing Java, you should be doing Visual Basic or something..
Ask your teacher to swap to the Java class
MS.....DOS? Really? Isn't that pretty much dead? That's like teaching Latin in schools. Oh wait.
Except that latin is older and still has it's uses in the modern world. MS-DOS doesn't. If you can, get transferred to the Java class?
Atleast you have a teacher. :saddowns: Our only teacher that knew java and c++ quit before the summer, and the school hasn't even been arsed to hire a new one, so more than 50% of my lessons have been cut for now just because of that. Fucking pathetic.
My "Basics of programming" teacher said that C++ is the better version of C, that the only differences are the input/output methods and that C# is the next version of C++. I think I win.

I really really REALLY hate that guy. I mean, my personal opinion is that C# is better than C++ and even I'm offended by that. He has no idea what he's talking about and knows as much as he did when he started teaching (10 years ago I presume). It's probably a good thing that my class has no interest in programming so they won't remember what he says anyway. Seriously, I have 4 programming related subjects and only one of the professors looks like he knows what he's talking about and that he's actually interested in what he teaches about. Others are just horrible... not to mention the guy that claims that JavaScript and PHP serve the same purpose...

First of all, there is no single language called BASIC - there's Yabasic, QBasic (and QuickBasic), Visual Basic (Not so much the .NET-versions), CoolBasic (meh), Blitz... And these (well, apart from QBasic) are only more modern ones. (Commodore Basic :3:) That aside, you said you learned Yabasic in ten minutes? Well, cool, now make a game with it. It's harder than you might think! (Especially if you don't happen to have a keyboard :D)
My "Basics of programming" teacher said that C++ is the better version of C, that the only differences are the input/output methods and that C# is the next version of C++. Unless it's already there.
First of all, there is no single language called BASIC
Yes there is actually. Definitely not what he meant but you know...
Most likely that Basic has a company name prepended, too, Darwin. If not, give some source.
All I know is when I fire up my Amstrad those are the first lines that are displayed. Never heard anyone add anything to it.
Never programmed in BASIC myself, but by the looks of it I don't think I've missed something :shobon:

Atleast you learn programming, at my school they don't teach it at all, The most complicated program you use is Excel.
I think he was trolling IRL.
I doubt that. [editline]07:28PM[/editline]
All I know is when I fire up my Amstrad those are the first lines that are displayed.
Atleast you learn programming, at my school they don't teach it at all, The most complicated program you use is Excel.
Trust me, it's a blessing. If by any chance someone in my class payed a little attention to what he's talking about they would think it's true... It's exactly that why people say stuff like "C++ is faster than C#" The only difference is that they hear it from people that believe that's true, this guy doesn't believe in anything, he just says stuff mindlessly...
Atleast you learn programming, at my school they don't teach it at all, The most complicated program you use is Excel.
2 4 8 Now look if you pull it down it will become 16! WOW ! But on a more serious note they teach basic HTML + CSS, JAVA in my IT class (turtle ftw)

My school doesn't have a computer science class of any sort, you're all lucky.
