We're making an arcade game compilation. Each of you creates a different arcade game. Post in here which game you'd like to make so we don't get two different people making a donkey kong clone. Use whichever language you prefer to code in as long as it compiles into a binary. All submissions must be opensource to encourage collaborative learning.
You may also place requests for game art here, I'm sure there are a few good pixel artists around here.
Requirements

Any games submitted have to be arcade games. The "genre" is pretty broad, obviously, but a list of possible games to clone is listed below.

Games can be clones or original creations, so long as they are arcade games.

They must compile into an executable, preferably a Windows .exe, but can be written in any language.

The games have to be open source, for "collaborative learning" to quote eXeC64.

You must post which game you plan to clone/create in advance! This is to prevent us ending up with multiple versions of the same game.

As said in the above quote, you can request art here, too.
A helpful list of possible arcade games can be found here:

We now have a Google Code SVN

PM Joshyy your GMAIL addresses to be added.
Credits to eXeC64 for the idea.
Well, it'd be easier with the framework of course, but having all the game folders with a sort of "game.txt" file inside (something that identifies the game, which could be read by the application) inside the browser folder, could make an excellent solution, and it has been seen before. Sorta like the Garry's Mod addon system, except.. With games.
Something like that.
[sp]Upload the game when completed to Mediafire with source code and I'll collect them into a .zip.[/sp]
Actually, upload it to the Google Code SVN we have.
You should have somekind of a framework or something so you can compile them together as a little arcade machine
I guess this project has it's merits, but I dunno, feels like taking the group out of "group project". This is just separate projects with a common theme.
Even still, I can see it being useful in giving people an idea for a simple, attainable project, and the motivation to actually finish it.
Are we obligated to make it if we sign up?
If not then sign me up for Bubble Bobble. I'm currently making it but since it's more of a learning thing than anything else, I'm not sure if I'll finish it.

Absolutely not. It's supposed to be a learning experience of sorts anyway.
Well, I'll either do Pong or Defender
Haven't decided yet :v:
Might make a game like 19xx
Don't hold me to that though. What with work and stuff.

I hardly see how you can be obligated to do something by a bunch of anonymous teenagers on an internet forum.
If it's expected of me to complete it then I feel obligated. I don't like letting people down.
I hardly see how you can be obligated to do something by a bunch of anonymous teenagers on an internet forum.
Well, more-or-less anonymous and more-or-less teenagers. There's adults in here, and some of the people openly expose their name and such.

Actually I wouldn't mind taking a peek at the source code anyway, even if it is incomplete.
Right now, all you would see is OpenGL setup stuff, 2 simple shaders and the main menu code.
I don't mind uploading it if I do finish.
I might contribute. How's breakout sound?
I might contribute. How's breakout sound?
BlkDucky, should I set up an SVN host for it all?
SVN sounds a lot easier, thanks.
And I'll put you down for Breakout.
I'd like to help programmers that will work in 3D, if you need 3D models, feel free to PM me.
(Can OP add me to the list please?)
Put me down for bomberman
Dunno how far I'll get, but sounds fun

And done.
Can you make an up-to-date version of an old game? (for example: PacMan with 3D top-down graphics and fancy particle effects)
Can you make an up-to-date version of an old game? (for example: PacMan with 3D top-down graphics and fancy particle effects)
I'm pretty sure you can, since that's called a remake.

I don't see why not. Doesn't really matter what it is so long as it's arcade-y.
Sense there made i none, but you get my drift.

Very interesting project.. I think having a framework for these things would be pretty rad, but seeing that having a framework would also make a lot of these things.. Well.. It'd probably take a lot more time that way.
But at least "game library browser" or something of sorts, that would be rad!
I may participate. I always loathed Galaga, so I may recreate that. One of my favorite arcade games to play when I was younger at my town's old skating rink. I hope school doesn't make me too busy though :frown:

I was thinking this too, but I'm not really sure how to go about doing it, so I'll leave it to someone who knows what they're doing if they want. :v:

Could we have a unified control scheme?, If that makes sense. would certainly make the whole thing feel more together.
Sign me up, I'll do a quick remake of Missile Command
Someone should make minefield...
Sign me up for Street Fighter 5 :smug:
Just kidding, but I'll probably make an entry. I don't know what I'll do, but this will surely be an interesting experience.

Tricky since some games use more keys etc. Whenever I get around to actually contributing (:v:), I'll probably go for Arrow keys + ZX.
