Does anyone think Facebook needs to add something?
Does anyone think someone needs to invent a new kind of social network?
I'm developing my own social network. I want to make sure to include things people need/want.
I know one issue I have is getting relevant content from my streams. There is some stuff I just don't care about.

Good luck to even get noticed with the sheer size of Facebook.
ah it's this thread again
I don't want to be harsh, but just try and do something original because your execution will not be as good as Facebook's. One feature is not enough to beat Facebook.
lol

I definitely agree.
There is room for improvement though.
I think there are a lot needs people dont' know they need
Henry Ford said "If I asked people what they wanted... they would have said 'faster horses'"
i've seen a lot of "faster horses"
but no cars...

forgive me if I'm wrong, but it seems like you're pretty new to web dev
I think you should try and make a horse or something before you try and make a car

What i'll probably do is work on a horse that is a someone like the car. I'm not completely ignorant on server side mechanics. I just suck with front end.
I want to innovate. I'm not going to make carbon copies.
Why make more horses when I can make a simple version of a car and build upon it over time? Learning the same skills and not optimizing spent resources (time)

you should learn first.
Building is learning... whether it's on a carbon copy or car.

Build it, then get feedback. At the very least, show us you've built something before and give us a reason to have confidence in your project.
I'd say spend your time on more useful/profitable ideas. Social networks are overdone.
Learn HTML, CSS, PHP, Javascript, mySQL and web server management
then come back and we will tell you how to make a social network.

That's the other thing I'm worried about.
My ideas would help out (so I believe) with connecting people and information.
I just hope there is still room for them though.

I have server managers... I know the rest well enough to make a simple version of the site.
CSS proof: miglit.com
MySQL Proof: k8r.us
HTML + PHP + Javascript proof: miglit.com and k8r.us

I don't understand why miglit.com is your "css proof".
and why would you ever say "proof" or anything...
you just setup a portfolio and show your work.
infect, your css proof doesn't show that you didn't just copy stuff off.
Here is why trying to start new social networks is a bad idea: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_effect
So you're saying the initial population is going to be hard to obtain?
I agree.

and You should be prepared to spend up to tens of thousands of dollars to maintain the server / run with a userbase as large as Facebook's.

Wait whoa slow down. Making a car is muuuuuch more easily done than making a horse. We don't even fully understand how to clone sheep, let alone a horse.

nope
Hey lets put it this way, Look at google+
I REALLY REALLY want to use google+ over Facebook, Like badly... But they don't have the API connections and the only other alternative is shotty browser extensions
But alas google+ still sucks (for now)
tldr: If google can't make a social network, Why do you think you can?

Incredibly so. Building general social networking websites just doesn't work. It's not viable at all. If you are really set on building one though, the only way to really do it and do it well is to niche way down. Target a very specific audience and offer some features that cater specifically to that audience which other networks couldn't offer simply because of how niche it is.
Maybe you create a social network for aspiring poets and offer some sort of poetry peer review feature on the website. Maybe you create a social network for amateur basketball players in New York and have a system for them to schedule games with other people in the area.

Actually that does work, http://www.tudiabetes.org/ has an EXCELLENT social network platform even though the user base is full of sugar starved diabetics (like myself) who can't get over themselves.
Is it me... or is Formspring falling?
I ask because it is resorting to 3rd party ads without implementing their own ad system like fb or twitter.

How are they suppose to get their money?
I mean they need money to survive.

Go on then, how would you do it?
Are you saying you'd make a horse, like Facebook?
Or will you make something revolutionary~
How are they suppose to get their money?

They've attempted to make money by making clients broadcast questions.
The fact that the ROI is rarely successful (the optimism that I can only assume the company depended on) means that the formspring is resorting to less top tier advertising methods.
Perhaps I'm being a little snoody, but it's optimal if a social network has it's own advertising system. not adsense or adbright.

I woudln't limit myself like formspring has.
[editline]10th February 2012[/editline]
I'd do "Something revolutionary"
what so formspring should write their own ad system even though it's not part of their core business?
