• What kind of a server do I need to handle this traffic?

Right now I've got about 10 sites on a single VPS through Slicehost. I've got a 768MB slice with 7 apache threads (anymore and it starts having to use swap). I'm currently using about 40GB of bandwidth a day with 15,000-30,000 visitors daily. (And as many as 500k pageviews). My sites load sluggishly and everything feels bogged down. I know that I'm overdue for an upgrade but I want to do it right. Most of my bandwidth is through images so I'm thinking of hosting them in the rackspace cloud and possibly moving my server to rackspace cloud servers as well (I like their management tools better). I'd also like to switch from Apache to nginx but I'm not sure where to start with migrating as I've put a lot of work into setting up Apache just the way I want it. I use a very extensive mod rewrite configuration and I'm really scared of having to port that over to nginx as well. Suggestions?
Try Lighttpd or Nginx instead of Apache. Edit: Ughh... Didn't read properly. I'd say it'd still be worth a try.
In my opinion, nginx has a much more sane rewrite system, so while it would be a bit of work, it wouldn't be too bad. Definitely try switching to nginx before upgrading anyway, nginx is a beast of a server.
Russian engineering at its best.
You might want to consider switching to Linode for lower prices while you're at it.
Or a dedicated server from Interserver. $10 cheaper per month, and you get much more than SliceHost are offering

That was my main problem with nginx, I just couldn't find how the hell can I enable that thing. I know nginx doesn't have htaccess, but I'm sure it does have some kind of alternative. Maybe I just didn't look deep enough.

I broke my server last night by stuffing up the network adapter configuration. I lost my RDP connection and I could not do a thing. I had to send in an emergency ticket asking them to fix it. They replied in 10 minutes and it was completely fixed in half an hour.
Alright, I think I'm going to try them out later today. What kind of server monitoring stuff do they provide?

Ok, any ideas on the easiest way to transfer my current server configuration and data over?

lol.... Just bought the server. Their checkout process sucks lol. Hopefully it'll get setup tonight.
lol.... Just bought the server. Their checkout process sucks lol. [editline]10th November 2010[/editline] That said, they are a more than excellent host, and I'm sure you'll have no problems.
lol.... Just bought the server. Their checkout process sucks lol. Hopefully it'll get setup tonight.
Don't worry, I didn't buy from them when I saw their interface. Apparently they're quite good though.
I just sent them a support email...I can't figure anything out lol...their interface/website/everything is AWFUL. But, once I get the server up and going I assume I won't care about that at...all.
You never use their website. You manage everything to do with your server in SSH/RDP
Ah ok, so I'm guessing I have to setup tinydns or something as they don't provide any nameserver managment. Pity :( I liked how easy it was to add new domains with slicehost.

I know you probably aren't looking for an i7 server but if you was don't get it from Interserver, I have a much better deal, 8GB RAM, 2 1TB HDD's under RAID 1, i7 Quad 2.8GHZ, 5TB Bandwidth all for $180 a month from Burst.NET
If you wanted something like that then Hetzner is where its at http://www.hetzner.de/en/hosting/produktmatrix/rootserver-produktmatrix-eq/
