Hi there, I've read some stuff on here and it seems like there are some guys on here who really know what they're talking about :)
I made a game and people can host their own server.
Now I want to add a masterserver where all servers register. So a user can see all online servers like in HL2.
People should also be able to download some small game files (total download is between 200kb and 5 MB) from that server.
Maybe I also want to add some kind of login system for the users who bought the game, so I can display news to them and other stuff they might be interested in. (Like the mc launcher)
The problem is I don't know anything at all about PHP and HTML stuff.
It would be very easy for me to write that masterserver in .NET 4.0 so I need a server that supports executing .net executables.
Of course I know all that stuff is going to cost me some money but don't get me wrong, I am willing to pay.
So question is: what website / company offers:
- a server that can run .net4.0 programs
- has enough bandwidth so users can download some game related files (maybe even the whole client - 10mb)
- is DDOS resistant
It would also be ok if the forum and the master server are from two different companys, I don't really care.
I already have a "portal" or "frontpage" or how it's called and a forum, so I don't need those things.
Any companys / websites you guys can recommend for a project like that ?
Well you're gonna need a windows server I guess. Which is gonna be expensive and over priced. bandwidth should be no trouble.
And for the DDOS bit, just make sure it says somewhere that it's DDOS protected, although it's kinda your problem usually if you get DDOS'd although I dunno, it's unlikely that you would be DDOS'd anyway.

There isnt really a way to make it DDOS protected.
the only way is make sure you have multiple servers so it looks like it's never down.

You can mitigate a DDoS with a hardware firewall, however, they are relatively expensive and increase in price depending on the kind of throughput you want, there's probably more to it though.
Thanks for all the answers so far :)
I don't think I'll ever get ddos'ed but I just want to be on the safe side.
My biggest problem is just that I need a (cheap) server that is able to host my own game-masterserver.
I don't know what company + plan I should get.
I'd even consider setting up the masterserver and everything another way so its cheaper, but I'd rather stay in the .net environment.
But if there isn't too much work involved I think its ok to switch to some other language / tech.
Well I've had experience with
Thrust VPS (although now I use a dedi) and the customer service is shit (if something breaks then they basically just say 'We suggest you reinstall your operating system') but the actual hosting is laright and pretty cheap.
I dunno how much RAM and stuff you want, but you can get a windows vps with 4gb of ram and 4tb of bandwidth for about $55 - although they are sold out on those at the moment.
Edit: Infact, all of their windows VPSs are sold out at the moment, how strange. Lol may as well disregard the above post then :)
OR MAYBE: http://www.mono-project.com/Main_Page
you don't need a windows server, just use mono

nothing can mitigate a dos. if there's more traffic coming down your pipe than your pipe can handle, you're hosed

I probably should have mentioned that :v:

so your avatar is just a metaphor for ddosing
Microsoft IIS servers are a ripoff unless your doing something dedicated to MsSQL or Ms apps like Windows media live internet streaming, which can be done in PHP as well as asp.
I personally haven't found a good use for IIS or asp scripts. I can pretty much to the same thing in PHP.
Go with PHP and if you need to use an asp script you can maybe find a server addon for php. I know apache used to have one.
And this quoted from above: [I]"Well I've had experience with

Sounds Like Microsoft CSR response.
But fail to mention that You may have to buy another license key for god only knows how much
unless your bit it and got a VLK license.

php performs like dogs balls compared to asp.net
[editline]30th March 2012[/editline]
so if you're looking at doing high traffic on a low end server, windows server + iis + asp.net is a brilliant combo

Best possible server service I know. Hosted with them for a year, Not down for more than a day.

Same here, absolutely fantastic service.

I vouch for Hetzner as well. Use them for work and for personal use.
