• So what's the deal with Bluehost/Hostmonster?

I know the whole unlimited space/bandwidth thing is absolute crap, but they seem alright, I just need a host to piss around with and test things but something that is nice and reliable. I'm a sucker for features though... From what I've been digging around some of you love them, some of you hate them, should I just stop talking and just buy it for 2 years?
It's alright. You can do better. http://fanaticalvps.com/
Hmm, is it really worth the money for a vps over shared hosting? (I think it's called that...) hostmonster is about $3.95 a month for 24 months. Sorry for asking but I'm just not sure why it's worth getting a vps.
More control over what you can do.
Why don't you just host your own server if you're just testing things? Not hard to setup a php/apache environment running the background.
I use hostmonster. They're fine. They do what they do and it's cheap.
Why don't you just host your own server if you're just testing things? Cheers guys, I'll consider a vps but I feel that I'll kind of be out of my element but it would be very interesting to have one.
000webhost.com Freehost. But its a freehost I use and trust :D.
I've used Bluehost for a few years. It's a pretty good host. Offers quite a few features (including SSH). Give me a minute; I'll get you a HTML "snapshot" of their cPanel. [editline]01:46PM[/editline] Nevermind. It freaks. bluehost is pretty nice, although they told me my forum was "getting too big" for their hosting which is total BS. They kept saying every once in a blue moon my site would rape their CPU, which I highly doubt.
I'm leaning closer to leaving it for a while, however: http://www.fatcow.com look pretty decent, haven't heard nearly as many bad things about them. I can't stand the whole unlimited bullshit but it seems its a gimmick that is catching on pretty much everywhere.
000webhost.com Freehost. Keeping the above in mind, I recommend http://asmallorange.com (or http://mediatemple.com if you're feeling rich).

Chances are if you're just wanting to "piss around" and need some hosting, some freehost somewhere will do plenty good :p. 000webhost is just like any basic paid host. They have outages, but usually they don't last more than an hour or so and its pretty rare to happen at all. Just google some topsites for free hosts, read some reviews on them, and pick which host you think best suits your needs. My host meets all my development needs, so thats all that matter to me. besides, whatchu got against 000webhost homie? D:
I frequently use hostmonster for smaller client sites, I've had nothing but good experiences with them, the couple times I've had something go wronging just hopped on the live chat with their support and they fixed it within 10 minutes. I use mediatemple for my own stuff though.
Thanks for the support of Fanatical guys! If you want more control, but also have enough Linux skill to secure a server (pretty simple, but you need the basics), go for a VPS. Otherwise shared. Bluehost & Hostmonster are mixed, I've seen lots of good reviews for simple sites, but downloads and so on seem to be limited quite harshly (in the TOS). Seen many bad reviews too. The fact they offer "unlimited" stuff is a lie, I'd never trust such a host.
Yeah I understand, it sounds so cheap and not particularly trust worthy, I kind of understand that it can also mean permitted so a fair amount for whatever the server can allow but still it's misleading. I like the simplicity of http://asmallorange.com with its $2 a month a month service with 150mb of space and 4.5gb of bandwidth, they seem really honest. Just out of curiosity would you allow one small private game server (8-10 slots of not so regular use for counter strike 1.6) to run on your vps? Or maybe just a vent server again for private use nothing special.
Anything is allowed on the VPS so long as it's legal and non-adult, so yes :)
-;22225203']non-adult
god damn it
god damn it
One of the only bad things about Hetzner really, they do it because adult sites attract DDOS's lots of the time, I believe. I mean, they're not going to notice one or two files, but it's more sites containing content. Of course, officially adult content is not allowed.
I've had webhostingpad for about a year and a half and I haven't had any problems. They are pretty strict about security (they require that you use TLS when using ftp, etc.), which can be a pain but it makes sense. Their customer support is great and they were happy to give me a discount when renewing my account for another year. Bottom line: great as far as shared hosting goes
god damn it
http://beyondhosting.net They allow adult! :)
http://beyondhosting.net They allow adult! :)
Ehh, a tad expensive. I don't need lots of processing power or RAM, just decent hard drive and plenty of data transfer.
-;22228468']Of course, officially adult content is not allowed.
http://fanaticalvps.com/legal/aup :wtc:
http://fanaticalvps.com/legal/aup :wtc:
Hmm, I remember confirming that with Hetzner before I wrote the AUP... Well, looks like I had done my research when I wrote that, and obviously not recently, adult is allowed.

Its in a country far far away from America. Your American viewers would have to deal with high latency and fluctuating bandwidth.
I use bluehost for all my sites and all my clients sites, but they have capped my on file count before, threatening to cancel my account if I did not get rid of like 10k files. (which was easy cause it was mostly text / image files, or test installations full of unnecessary php files) but I really want to make a switch to a better server soon. I'm not sure where though :/

http://beyondhosting.net Feel free to PM me, we will do the migration for free for you as well.
Anyone happen to traceroute their provided IP? Its in a country far far away from America. Your American viewers would have to deal with high latency and fluctuating bandwidth.
It's called Germany :/ And bandwidth is pretty damn solid to the UK, Hetzner have an excellent network. The world isn't only about Americans, for Europeans, American servers have higher latency (not too high, like 100-200ms), and 'fluctuating bandwidth'. But for downloads, websites, streaming, it's perfect. It only really affects gaming. http://88.198.224.126/bigtest.tgz Speed test from one of our VPS's.
That's actually not too bad. One minute to download 120+ megabytes.
I don't think its fair that you advertise USD pricing but are infact selling servers from a DC in Germany. I do however find it funny you host your main site in the states while you provide hosting for clients thousands of miles away. I'll leave it at this, if your in Europe Fanatical is a great solution with a owner that stands by his name. If your in America then its absolutely not a good solution and is absolutely useless for game servers or low latency application. I mean no disrespect what so ever to Fanatical, I've been in this industry many years now, having a high latency when advertised locally (USD Currency) will give you bad reputation. Unhappy customers are 130% more likely to speak up than satisfied customers..
