What free one is good? Also bonus points if it supports sftp.
Windows Explorer
FileZilla
FireFTP, Notepad ++ FTP, etc, etc
Windows explorer? The fuck?

Just mount an ftp volume.
But in windows I'd use filezilla, in linux I'd use my file manager and mount the ftp volume, and on mac I use cyberduck.
WinKey + E
Edit the URL to ftp://sitename.com
Upload your files
I use filezilla. Does the job great, lets you do chmod file permissions and such. Also supports sftp.
If all you care about is sftp, rsync is amazing.
Ftp is terrible. SSH + Rsync = Best thing to ever happen to computers.
What're you all smoking, WinSCP is the best ftp client evar. Supports FTP, SFTP, SSH, automatic directory updating, synchronization of directories, and is lightweight.

I never could figure out how to mount an ftp server on the filesystem in linux.
SSH is so much nicer for that.
WinSCP yo
WinSCP.
Filezilla is okay, don't care much for the gui though. WinSCP has a sexy GUI though :D.
Thanks guys
FileZilla
Great program.
WinSCP is quite awesome.
FileZilla for much stuff, but just Windows Explorer for basic...
FileZilla for simplicity, WinSCP for play around with different protocols flexibly.
I like FireFTP. Can't really be bothered to get FileZilla or some other fully fledged client.

This.

Same here.
Filezilla - extremely stable and powerful, plus full SFTP support.
Can you setup winscp to show files you are editing? I liked that about smartftp that you could see the files you are currently editing.
Edit:
Also with the background mode, I have it set to upload 5 at a time but it only shows 1?
