Hey guys, I want to get your opinions as web developers, we are trying to create a "go to" place for people to learn and share about web/business/apps/game devleopment, we are working on a forum redesign, however aside from what what would make you register to the site? There is a lot of content that you might find helpful all over the place and a lot of knowledgable people, essentially we want to be somewhat like YoungEntrepreneur but less about "entrepreneur" and more about making and managing projects online and making money online for young people.
http://www.youngwebbuilder.com/forum/index.php
Why would you come to an already established web dev community asking them to move over to another one. Everyone on here is familiar with the people that contribute to this community, they have no reason to join another forum whatsoever unless you have some valuable original content which i don't see anywhere on your site.
And the fact that the majority of your posts / threads contain a link to your site gives me a stale taste in my mouth.
i find it boring to look at. everyone is so serious and there aren't any kind of jokes while posting stuff.

Maybe there are no jokes because the website is not a joke forum? There would be but people aren't going to spend time providing worthless content on the site while it is new.
Also this site is not a web-dev site it has a forum for web-dev but it is not that active.
Skin it so I don't instantly think xenforo when I visit it.
Also, your articles don't look professional. For example: http://www.youngwebbuilder.com/how-to-code-a-basic-inline-popup/ The article that you have written does not really explain to anyone how to code a popup all it really does is give you some sample code and a link to the colours page on w3schools.
The lack of a step by step breakdown may be alright for a seasoned programmer, but for a beginner it's a poor tutorial. Another thing I think you should consider is the fact that as a link to a test example of the tutorial, you've put it here: http://youngwebbuilder.com/test/ Now for me this does not bode well for the future, as where are you going to put the other live examples? For me it shows poor planning.
In the same tutorial (yep there's more!) you even tell the user to use font tags! Encouraging the use of outdated methods is not recommended and to me it makes you seem unprofessional. Although you do say at one point To change the colour of the text you will have to go into the style sheet, and either “class” it The fact that you don't go into detail does not encourage a beginner to use that better and more accepted method. Finally, I would not consider setting the class of the element "classing" it

Wait, I've got another thing: http://www.youngwebbuilder.com/is-it-beneficial-to-buy-twitter-followers/
In this article (if you can even really call it that) all it seems like you are doing is asking your community if they think it is worthwhile in you doing that. To me that does not seem very trustworthy as buying twitter followers is essentially fraud (albeit minor) as your giving your users a better view of yourself than you actually deserve. It wouldn't matter so much if you were just buying followers, but the fact that you advertise yourself as doing this is not deserving of respect nor does it show any professionalism.

I did not advertise myself as buying twitter followers always the opposite, I don't know where you got that from, and I did not write that article about popups so I will speak to the person that did I had not yet took a proper look though it.
snippity snoop

I agree with you but a lot of teenagers don't know/think that. Everywhere I go I see people selling Twitter followers so It cant be that bad, not that I recommend it.
Maybe give us a few cool gadgets or things that we can't get anywhere else. Fact is until you get a massive user base you can't exactly convince people to join your site just for advice. Make it look cool and original too. anyone can make a forum site using something like Xenforo. How many people can make something amazing?
looks like it's targeted at ~12 year olds with that colour scheme and name

Well while it is a good idea, getting people to learn to make websites young. This website isn't doing it, teach some HTML, PHP, and JS here!

Absolutely true, what I want is to get as many people as possibel sharing their knowledge and learning new things, we are not really comparable with this forum here because we cover making money, business, apps etc..
Here is a cool gadget (kind of) that we are giving away, if that makes you happy.
www.youngwebbuilder.com/camtasia-studio-8-review/
Furthermore we are going to be giving away $50 credit to www.seoclerks.com and A new plugin similar to popup domination, are these the sorts of things you mean?

Yes I have. Thanks, :)
Is there a reason why you rated me dumb? I gave you some valid feedback, and in reply to your question, I linked directly to the article on your site where you talk about buying twitter followers. Whether or not you wrote the article, you should be at least partly responsible for the content on your site.

It doesn't have to be a "joke forum" to let users have fun you know. You can still get serious discussions in the forum. Like this sub-forum. the Question thread and WAYWO have some fun in it while there are some serious discussions about things.
I can't stand forums that are super serious. I find a way to get myself banned in it.

Whenever I post anything here people always feel the need to rate me, and I haven't complained. Anyway, you said that I promoted buying followers when I did not.
I was on this forum like 6 years ago as well. But I lost my account.

The forum is not serious it is fun, there is just not enough active people at the moment to sustain it.

My point is that the article on your website implies that. I did not ever say that you were doing that but rather that the article itself is bad promotion and looks unprofessional. I am suggesting that you remove it and try to write something that is actually relevant for the people on your site to bring you in more visitors. I am only trying to help. But unfortunately it seems that although you are asking for our opinion on what would make us register on your site, you do not want to listen to the suggestions we give. If you don't want constructive criticism, why did you bother posting at all?

I know yes, sorry I am just having a bad day I will take your points into consideration.
Thank you for your help.
After the responses to the feedback provided insofar, I have to ask: are you going to take on board any of this sound advise which you asked for or just try and justify all your mistakes.
You're a beginner at the moment, and you made a good move by asking for help. Don't worry that you are doing things wrong, that is what a beginner does. Just try and listen to some of the pointers that those who are not beginners are telling you.
Best of luck with the site by the way, just stick to it and keep innovating and you'll find the community will grow on it's own. That's just my two cents though.
Your site looks bland and boring, everything so serious and why not allow jokes? Come on the only reason why I love this place is the comedy, making everything "NO JOKES ALLOWS" is a deal breaker to some who may want to sign up. And you're rating people who are giving good feedback dumb, just to advise you, Facepunch will hit hard on you if you want criticism..
Sorry, you need to Log In to post a reply to this thread.
