I know of mybb (which I'm using), phpbb and SMF but was wondering if there's any other forum software that's better than them as they either look like shit or have limited/broken functionality.
Fluxbb is pretty good as well
-snip- I'm dumb, disregard this post.

As for looks: any piece of forum software can look as good as you want it to be, it is the theme that makes it look different, not the software...
http://www.discourse.org/
Discourse is a Rails app, not PHP.
Any reason it needs to be in PHP? If not, NodeBB looks awesome

Well, then again I haven't touched web hosting in forever. But then again, I know the Gandi has PHP, Python, Node & Ruby - so I guess it's not impossible

However it's the best one I've come across for the moment.
Any reason it needs to be in PHP? Now.

phpBB 3.1 (fairly recently released?) uses an extension system which is a godsend compared to the old 3.0 mods - no more messing about with existing files. The extensions are just kinda hard to find since they're not all listed on the official site. If you've only tested phpBB up to 3.0.12, give 3.1.2 a try. On first glance it looks the same but it's got a lot more under the hood.
