Hi Guys, I would like to begin with a career in web design, and i'm wondering which path to take. I'm currently in sixth form about to do my mock AS exam's. To be honest, I really hate sixth form, so i'm not sure whether to stick it out and go to university and do something related to what i would like to do(Computer Science?) or try and get an apprenticeship with a web design company. Thanks!
More of a 'Questions that don't need their own thread' question, but hey ho. http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1250244&page=117 I recommend learning the basics. HTML(5) & CSS(3) & Basic Javascript. For HTML/CSS here's a good place to learn. http://www.htmldog.com/ Stay clear of W3Schools. It's got a bad reputation and has nothing to do with the W3C. Just use it for basic reference if you must. For Javascript Codecademy is quite a good place to learn. http://www.codecademy.com/ You'll also (probably) want to get good with some form of backend server language for database stuff and dynamic sites etc. PHP+A framework (Laravel is a good choice recently), Ruby On Rails or even NodeJS are good choices at the minute. There's free online courses for each. The best I can say is just learn the basics and learn as you go along. Come up with ideas in your head and make them work; and solve problems as you go along and you'll know how to do them next time. Maybe make yourself a website/portfolio/cv sort of site? That's how I learn anyway. University courses will teach you this sort of stuff but to be honest learning yourself is probably the best way to go; and it's useful stuff anyway.
Thanks for your advice, but maybe I wasn't too clear. I already have a decent knowledge of HTML5 and CSS3, and as for php I feel i know enough to get by. Ruby is something I would like to start however the set up is proving to be difficult... (The routes). I would like some form of formal education so uni or apprenticeships, and was hoping people in the web design field can tell me how they got there! Sorry about the new thread instead not a post!
From what I have experienced so far, having a portfolio gets you more than a diploma when we're talking about Web Development. Nowadays everyone makes "websites" (Wordpress install, theme and some modules, earn cash)...
