Hey this is not a WAYWT and its unrelated to the discussion above but I just wanted to share my story with you guys. I basically learned how to code from this community and it really kickstarted my career in programming. All the time at school I hear people tell me I'm a genius or I'm smart because of all the projects I've done, but I really can't see myself that way. I look up to you guys in WAYWT, I really do. You guys started here like me, you were just a bunch of kids who just had an interest in modding and playing games. I can't see myself as a good programmer because I'm not good as you guys, and I'm still learning. For how young you guys are, or were when you started programming, you came up with some amazing projects. I hope you know how amazing you guys are, and how great this community is at fostering young minds and pushing them to achieve so much. Thank you for all that you guys have done, I wish all of you bright futures.
from making it rain on alyx nude poses to making it rain in real lyfe yolo
Cool I made it into the OP I can die happily now
Whoaaa, I made highlights for the first time ever. Neat!
Wow, also first time I made the headlights. It's not really my work though, credit goes to the 4 artists in my team (Frying Dutchman included). I really wish I'd come up with something impressive, but all I make is just... small unimportant things I guess. Now I think of it, anyone here who'd like a C# XInput wrapper (with support for 4 XBox controllers)? The file looks like shit but it works like a charm. (If anyone still even works with XInput)
God damnit, now I feel obligated to post again but I can't think of anything cool to post. I'm working on a screenshot hosting service but I don't want to make it public. I'm working on a small vps status android app but it's not worth showing. I'm working on a cool android app that I'm actually aiming for releasing next school year but now is not quite the time to show it. [editline]3rd May 2015[/editline] Also I want to get into 3d games but unity isn't available on linux hnnnggggggg
hello , world .
I present the final for my 2nd semester in Java. This final was dedicated to creating a fully functional front end for a database using JavaFx.

Pretty happy with it, as it is the first project where I finished every goal I set for myself! However there is room for improvement (such as actually mapping each vending machine and not assuming 1 vending machine per floor..)
Just re-realised how talented people on here are.. Huge probs to all of you, all your projects look amazing!
I seem to have taken a long time to write this, so the other thread closed...
I was forced to take piano for around 5 years, it only really developed a hatred towards piano. I really prefer the guitar. I've never been pushed academically and while its relaxing its also lead to a lot of bad habits like not studying or doing my homework outside of school though I still make good grades. Perhaps there can be a happy medium?
There definitely is, somewhere. However it also really depends on the person. It's also not like there's only one scale for these things either, since you can be strict about school work being done while leaving a lot of freedom elsewhere. Another option is to be helpful with school work if you can (which I think is the case for most people here already by now) so it (hopefully) doesn't turn into an issue in the first place. My parents are teachers, so I think I always got the help I needed in that regard and a bit more. It also definitely helped that they gave me opportunities to learn about a lot of different things instead of forcing me into anything particular. (I discovered my love for physics really early due to that.) They have some expectations of course, but otherwise they pretty much let me do what I wanted except for general safety rules and telling me (how) to be nice to others, which is great because I've always been bad with arbitrary authority. (Overall I did have a lot of trouble elsewhere due to that part of my personality though :v:) That said I am pretty bad at learning things that don't interest me. I got a bit better recently due to having to do it for maths (boring!, at least as taught normally in uni) but I really have quite a way to go in that regard. I also didn't pick up an instrument until I randomly saw a really good bassist featured on TV, became a bit star struck, bought a (really cheap) e-bass with money from my first job and now a few years later started actually learning it using Rocksmith. (I never had confidence in being able to stick with music school for any extended amount of time. I'm not too fond of those places for other reasons and I'm a somewhat irregular learner so I don't think I could do it "on schedule".) I'm really terrible so far but it's tons of fun so I think in the end it worked out in a way. I really doubt it's going to turn into anything resembling career though. This turned out pretty long and very off-topic, so I'll just end it on this: What definitely isn't a good idea is invoking fear to get a child to do something. You hear a lot of success stories, but that's mostly because those are far more visible than if someone becomes depressive at a young age or outright breaks under the stress. I also remember seeing a study that children who grew up in more supportive households were a lot better at dealing with adverse situations too. I'm honestly pretty shocked that there'd be such a suicide incidence in any particular group going by this factor. I suspect it's usually not that likely to end that way, but it's quite possible that I just never got to know anyone who had real trouble like that due to a mixture of cultural differences and generally being a bit distant. Anyway, those are just my two cents about a topic I really don't know anything about.
Aww shit I missed all the talk about Matts, I would have fitted right in!
Only 1 day late? I can't believe [editline]2nd May 2015[/editline] Hi Matt
Maybe this month I'll actually make something instead of throwing away each project after a week :(

One of my class assignments is to create a server/client setup for a simple dice game. I already wrote a client with a simple string protocol but we have to remake the server with any protocol we want as long as the professor will be able to test it. Obviously the best method is Color objects so I wrote this helper class.
public class ColorProtocol { public static Color[] toArray(String msg){ char[] chars = msg.toCharArray(); Color[] colors = new Color[chars.length/3 + 1]; int c = 0; for(int i = 0; i < colors.length; i++){ int r = (c < chars.length) ? (int)chars[c] : 0; c++; int g = (c < chars.length) ? (int)chars[c] : 0; c++; int b = (c < chars.length) ? (int)chars[c] : 0; c++; colors = new Color(r, g, b); } return colors; } public static String fromArray(Color[] colors){ String msg = null; if(colors.length > 0) msg = ""; for(int i = 0; i < colors.length; i++){ if(colors.getRed() != 0) msg += (char)colors.getRed(); if(colors.getGreen() != 0) msg += (char)colors.getGreen(); if(colors.getBlue() != 0) msg += (char)colors.getBlue(); } return msg; } public static Color toColor(int n){ if(n < 0 || n > 9){ throw new IllegalArgumentException(); } return new Color(n * 25, n * 15, n * 5); } public static int fromColor(Color c){ if( c.getRed() / 25 != c.getGreen() / 15 || c.getRed() / 25 != c.getBlue() / 5 ){ throw new IllegalArgumentException(); } return c.getRed() / 25; } public static void main(String[] args){ Color[] colors = ColorProtocol.toArray("Hello World!"); System.out.println(ColorProtocol.fromArray(colors)); // Prints 'Hello World!' Color color = ColorProtocol.toColor(5); System.out.println(ColorProtocol.fromColor(color)); // Prints '5' } }
I made a small tool that converts apollo justice animations into ren'py characters. The program converts the animations into their own folders, detects the ones that loop and then generates a character script file. This is the output: http://pastebin.com/6jjhxqq1 [t]http://i.imgur.com/hvl3TSi.png[/t] I made this shit in half an hour and I'm not particularly proud of the code, so I guess i'll clean it up once I wake bye sleep.

I wanted to start working on an editor but ran into issues when I tried to integrate a GUI library so instead I reworked the rendering pass to work off a vector, which means: Multiple lights, yay!
How are you doing this?
Using SMFL to render the sprites I want to shade into a mask and then running it through a GLSL shader once per light. The result is then stored in a light buffer which is applied over the screen at the end of rendering. The light buffer looks like this (I added a global ambient lighting value just now):
