So in the past few months, I've seen quite a few people advertise on Facepunch about either web hosting or VPS hosting. My question for people around here are, What Do You Look For? What is it that you want from the provider of than just the server or web hosting? prhaps its the tech support? maybe you just want dirt cheap costs no matter if there is no tech support. I don't know and most of these guys don't know so leave a message and tell us. My reasoning for all of this is simply because I'm curious.
For me, technical support doesn't have to be great but when it is, I do find it beneficial. At the same time, cost does come into it because I'm not made of money. I find a happy medium of both works for me.
For domain hosting I use 1and1 for my website and it was pretty straight forward, and i think the 1st month was free if i remember correctly.
It's nice that companies like Digital Ocean bill you per hour. That means that if I want to quickly buy myself a server to test something on, all I pay for is a hour of usage. I can destroy the server and I didn't have to pay $5 for the whole month.
Other than that, technical support that isn't going to argue with you if something falls under support or not, if you're really stuck they'll suggest something or give you a push in the right direction. Some support departments just say "sorry, that's not part of our service" and leave it at that.
