I can't reduce the poly count without ruining the quality. Is it possible?

Unless the model is several times larger than a human, there's no need to go past 12,000 tris. Valve themselves rarely go past 6,000, and their models still look great.
I read that alyx is 8,323 tri's ([url=http://forums.cgsociety.org/archive/index.php/t-260881.html]quick google[/url]), so this will be like showing 4 alyx models on the screen at once. Right? (I'm not expert here, but it seems logical that that would be the same thing)

Thats what normalmaps are for.
Normal maps aren't going to take an octagon and turn it into a smooth cylinder.
