I have a model that I exported from another game. When I import it with 3ds max, it looks fine. However, when I export it or convert it to a polygon, it looks "boxy". Example:

I'm not sure how to apply smoothing groups (I've never ported a model before or done anything model related xD), but I use AutoSmooth, TurboSmooth, and MeshSmooth, and nothing happens!
1. Select all parts of the model. Ctrl + A selects everything in the scene. You can also just drag select the pieces.
2. Right-click. Convert To > Convert to Editable Poly.
3. If your model is one piece of geometry you can skip this step. Click on a piece( ex. head, torso), go to Modify and attach all the pieces. You can attach manually or use the list mode.
4. Make sure the model is properly scaled.
5. Once the model is one big piece of geometry go under the Vertex selection mode and select all the vertices. Once again, Ctrl + A.
6. Weld them. Click on the box next the Weld button to enter a proper Weld Threshold. THIS IS IMPORTANT! If you select a number too low you will screw up the model. Depending on the scale of the model, choose somewhere between .01 and .001. Usually .01 works perfectly. To test if you've gotten the proper threshold look at a part of the model that has high vertex density( this is usually the head) and see what happens when you weld it. If the geometry doesn't scrunch up then you've welded it properly.
7. This should happen automatically after you've welded the vertices but it's still important. Enter the Polygon sub selection mode and select all of the faces. Give them all 1 for the smoothing group. If it looks wrong then you've got to manually give each part different smoothing groups. For example, if you have a cube it will look bad when all the faces are under one smoothing group.
If any of this is too difficult then you're not ready.
You sir are a hero! Thank you so much!
