I've been trying to get 3dx ripper to work with games I have on steam, but have had no luck so far. After searching for a little the only thing I could find were a few posts saying to create a shortcut to the game and paste the path to that into 3dx, but that doesn't seem to work either. The game will still launch from 3dx when I do it that way, but it won't rip anything.
Does anyone know of a way to make 3dx ripper work with steam games? Or possibly another program I can use in place of 3dx?
Thanks.
What game are you trying to rip from? If you're ripping from source games you don't need it, otherwise we need to know what game you're actually trying to rip from.
I'm trying to rip from GTA IV.

I personally could never get 3d ripper to work on GTA IV.
The way to port games from steam is to launch steam through 3d ripper, then launch the game you want to rip through steam.
Go to your games folder, put there your 3d ripper.exe, change game.exe name to another, change rippers name to original exe (aka gta4.exe to gta4orig.exe, 3dripper to gta4.exe) Start your game via steam, it will open 3d ripper and start your game.

I recommend you to use SparkIV which can export model files as .smd and export textures from GTAIV.
The thing is, you have to find textures that you need in case of vehicles.
