• Convert a .obj to high detail model?

Hi all, New to the forum. I recently read a thread in regards to how one might extract the high detail model from the .obj file using 3ds max? Is this possible, and if anyone knows how I would appreciate the help. @drkfontiers
I don't really understand what you're asking. The obj should just hold whatever model file it is, no? Are you asking how to open an obj in 3DS Max?

Some of the .obj files I have for example the models from WoT the models are in low poly format. I was wondering if there is some modifiers in place which can be removed/ replace to retrieve a high poly version of the model. I know that MeshSmooth somewhat works, but was wondering if there is a more in-depth means.
Meshsmooth basically just hides edges, but a cube will never become a ball just because the edges are invisible. What (i think) you're asking is not possible with a simple "modifier", you can subdivide a mesh and increase the amount of polygons, but those additional polygons will do nothing to enhance the quality of the model if you don't enhance it further. There is, however, a way to increase visual quality if the models have a normal map (the purple texture) that you forgot to apply.

I'm just getting into 3ds Max with Digital Tutors. I plan to actually only use the model as a kind of reference or starting point :) I'm using WW II Drawings as my primary background planes
I did figure out the following which has helped greatly. Most of the models I've found are triangulated but using the following I'm able to greatly improve on the model. 1.) Modify Panel dropdown > Edit Mesh 2.) Modify Panel dropdown > Optimise 3.) Check the properties [Auto Edge] [Material Boundaries] [Smooth Boundaries] Perhaps this might be useful to someone one day struggling as I was. Cheers!
