Getting started and where the fuck can I get the free programs people are talking about

I've never modelled before and I would like to give it a go.
I'm a keen mapper but have always felt held back due to the lack of props.
First of all, what programs should I be using?
I was told I should that XSI thing because it was free but I couldn't find a download link.
Is there a free (possibly older) version of 3Ds Max, because I'm pretty sure I had it before on my old PC?
Thanks in advance.
Gmax, blender(interface sucks for nubs), milkshape 3d(same, and is a trial).

Thanks, is there actually a free version of 3Ds Max?

Nope, it costs a pretty penny.

There's also kHED and Wings3d, and if you're really desperate (and good with Hammer), you can try Propper.
I can't compile with propper.
I forgot how to set the propper compile code :(
