OK, so I was reading the tutorial here http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=469821 ,but it still leaves me confused about model reskinning.
Could someone perhaps point me in the right direction (or at least to the next proper step)?
I want to use the "drjones" citizen skin from Rusty's zombie survival texture pack, and the Half-Life 2 "art_facemap," but I can't figure out what I need to do next.
So, I have VTFedit, and I already have the VTF's in their final shape (I'm not even bothering with editing those right now). In other words, the tutorial I read above is just too nauseating to read, and it makes it seem like it's more complicated than it should be.
Ok try this.
I'm assuming you've already used GCFscape to get the art_facemap.vtf (or otherwise aquired it) and the VMT file to go with it (if not i suggest you do so, you don't need the VMT file for reskinning over an exisiting skin but you will need it for hexing and should really have it anyway as it has useful info...).
Open the VTF file in VTFedit and export it as whatever you like (i'd go for BMP for now). Now open the BMP file in paint and draw a red line from the top left corner to the bottom right corner. Now save that and reopen VTFedit. Import the BMP file into VTFedit and save it as a VTF file the same name as the original you had (i'd advise keeping a backup of the originals of any file worked on). Put this file in place of the original (slightly more complex if the original was in the GCF file as you will need to make sure it's in the exact same folders, which is where the VMT file comes in useful, though if you don't alter the VMT you will need to have the VTF in the same place as the original anyway).
Now you should have replaced the original texture and you can test it in HLModelViewer, if your lucky and it works, otherwise you can do it in GMod itself. The model should now have random parts of a red line on parts of it.
If you don't want to replace the original you will need to hex the model and alter the VMT files so that they don't replace anything.
Hope that helps you slightly more than the other one (doubt it though ^^).
Alright, I'll try and do that.
Thanks for the tips. Hopefully I can actually do this.

This is one of those times where I wish that they'd update the tutorials.

np :) good luck ^^
Well, the idea was that I wanted to use one of the Zmaster heads with one of the Zmaster outfits, and both of them are in the same folder: materials/models/humans/male/zmaster as lars_facemap (Asian dude) and MaleSurvivor 7 (Leather Jacket, etc). My intention was to actually make it so that this face could be used with this outfit as a hexed model (and so I could try swapping modified Asian dudes on the body). Would that change the way I do this?

Are the models the same for both, otherwise that sounds like a headhack which is a modelling job.
That's what I'm wondering, I've seen the heads on the different outfits, so I'm not sure. And it doesn't really specify whether or not I can customize the bodies or not.

Somehow it is possible, as shown here.

What I can't figure out is how this is done.
