• Can the Student Version of Maya export SMD?

Hi. I'm a student, and acquired the Maya modeling program via a 3 year trial offered by my College. Every file I save will bring up a pop up in every version of Maya, talking about some legal stuff about student work, which is why I'm posting this question. Question: There are plugins for Maya that would allow me to export Source SMD files, correct? Should they / Would they / Will they work for my Student version, or do I need to buy it? Will it be Legal?
using the Valve Developer Community wiki, I haven't been able to find any plugins that are developed for the 2015 and 2016 releases of Maya. as far as plugin support goes, I am assuming one should be able to install and use plugins for the student version of Maya, seeing how one can do the exact same things with a student version of 3DS Max. I have not recently used Maya, so I am working on assumptions.
afaik sfm contains the plugins upto maya 2013. i dunno if that works with the edu version, i don't have it. you gotta try to make it work. ;)
Autodesk's terms mainly disallow the use of the student software for commercial/professional/for-profit purposes (Which I'm guessing you're not doing). Aside from that they should be functionally identical to the commercial versions aside from metadata identifying Max/Maya files as being created using an educational license I assume, having used the educational copy of Max.
If you wanna export in SMD, download Milkshape 3D. When you want to bring in a static model into the game, just export as OBJ from Maya or FBX for any rigged cars/characters etc. and import into Milkshape and export its SMD from there
