So, I'm like, extremely new at this, and I need help.
Right now, I'm doing this strictly for a learning experience only. I'm using the program 3D Ripper DX, and I'm trying to rip models from Fallout 3. I am able to open the .3dr file I get from the program in 3DS Max 2011, and I'm able to see the textures and all that. When I export the model as .smd, the textures are gone. I don't know how to go about adding them back in. I do have the original .dds files converted to .vtf, but I don't know if that was needed or anything.
You don't need to use 3D Ripper DX with Fallout 3 - that will just over-complicate the porting process for the models in that game. Use BSA Browser to locate and extract the particular models and textures that you want, and then use Nifskope to load up the .NIF files and export them as a .OBJ file.
As for the textures disappearing from your export .SMD file, that's not a big issue - from what I've noticed, that seems to be a normal thing. As for the textures, they need to be in the .VTF format if you wish to have the .VMT(s) for the model you're porting to actually load the textures when in-game. Having them in any other format will usually lead to the textures showing as black and purple checkers.
I already have a thread on Fallout 3 if you just want the models http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1290712&highlight=Fallout
