I'm having some trouble with copyright's and so i'm asking Facepunch's help.
Now before reading more do remember that i'm most likely the worst modeler that ever existed(i can't even be called a modeler)
I have ripped some models off of a Wii game but they still require some work(some of which already done).
The models need(ed) to be rigged and be smooth(the models legs were blocks, the elbows were very thin,....).
If this mod would ever get released free or not(even though there's a 99% chance i won't ever get some money from it since i made it),would i run into problems?
I already try'd to contact the company that's responsible for the game but they are a pain in the ass to get responses from, probably because they are thinking yet another idiot is contacting us for something.
Sorry if i'm making spelling mistakes, English isn't my native language and i also speak it better then i write it.
Making money out of ported models will give you problems. I pretty sure the company won't let you do it. And even contacting the company for ripped models will only get you problems. It's like saying, hey I stoled your models and work from your devs, can I make money out of it?
This is what I think if I understand correctly what you mean.
What you're asking is illegal, and even if it wasn't, I personally frown upon it.
Technically, the majority of the ported models on Garry's Mod are illegal, but they're free and the developers don't notice/don't care. You are going to have to settle with either releasing them for free or making your own models.
Although now that I think about it, there's a fellow named S-Low who ports models as Counter-Strike playermodels and occasionally gets paid for ones to be kept private.
I was expecting these answers.
I'm probably going to stay to the ported ones for now.
If it would ever happen that this get's a price tag(which is very unlikely) then i'm probably going to hire somebody to build the models from scratch.

I'm surprise S-low even allowed or even getting away, with what he does.
I remember he was trying to charge 10$ for a fallout ragdoll to dragoshi once.
Well it's questionable. Under some copyright legislature - porting a model, rigging it and converting textures can probably net you a derivative copyright - most of all if the company does not give a cease and desist. Since copyright has to be actively protected and is rarely protect by official government means.
Hence all the cease and desists a lot of companies send out to mods using their respective license. Blizzard and bungie were known for this.
That said - even if the very copyright of the models might be questionable depending on your country I would extremely extremely advise against using ported models in a mod of any sort. Keep mod content unique, or based on the content provided with the engine used for the mod. Do not port assets from other engines into it.
Since that would also cause a shitstorm from the public for your mod.

It is indeed still a risk.
I'm wondering if there would be any problem if i would create new models based on the same idea.
They wouldn't be ported.
That would be fine. Ideas can't be copyrighted, only their implementation.

That is not entirely true.
An example would be apple suing people because ... looks to much like their .... if you know where i'm getting at.
